Ive had a ferrel cat around all winter, never could catch or trap it. Every morning a gather eggs and i count my birds in the brooder. Today I had 13 (counted twice), I usually only have 12. Hmm...

So I reached in and moved the birds around and I found the extra. All the chics were cuddling with this one. Lol

My brooder cat when I got home, roosting and watching over the birds. Lol
I'll be darned!

My chicks won't be in for a couple more weeks, but I have everything pretty much ready to go. I will put down paper towels over the sand and place in the other food and water containers when it's time.. I just wanted to see how much room I would have in there for them. The brooder is in our garage.

The brooder is a 110 gal stock tank. We will probably have 50 in there at once so I figured they would need the space. I don't know what to call them, but we had display metal grid walls from our business and when the chicks are bigger if they need the space I was going to place 3 or 4 of the grids on the sides of the brooder and attach roosts working there way up the with a cover over the top.

That is awesome, I am glad you got a picture of that. I would have thought a stray cat would have murdered, not slept with your chicks. Very cool ending to a post I thought was going to end differently when I started reading it. :)

JetsChickens I thought the same thing tried for a month to catch it cuz I knew once I got my lil birds out there id have troubles with the cat. It must of snuck in the brooder when I had my birds out during the day. So I was shocked when in seen it and even more shock when I seen all my chicks cuddling with it. Now i hope it sticks around, itll keep the mice away from the bird food.

That is awesome! It is amazing how animals don't always follow the norm when it comes to predators etc.

Due to the chicks getting most of their wing feathers in now (especially the BOs) we've had a bunch of crashing around and squawks as one chick tries to fly and lands on another.

We have expanded the North Gate toddler pen we bought to double it's size. (we bought the 6 panel pen which gave 18 sq foot of space and the 2 panel expansion kit which allowed for 36 sq foot of space) The chicks were a bit hesitant at first, but are now flying from side to side. We had our first issue with a broken and bleeding tail feather (and had to isolate a chick for a couple of days-now released back) and decided it was time to give more space. They should now have plenty until the coop is ready for them to go outside. :)

Highly recommend this pen as a brooder option for any interested!!
