For brand new chicks, what is the best thing to put on the floor of the brooder to prevent splayed leg and help their little legs develop correctly?

I have always used pine chips. Some folks will lay paper towels over the top to keep them from eating them or even the shelf liner non adhesive backed of course.
I have never done it and have not had an issue.
I do put the food in a cardboard tray like the ones that the canned cat food sits in at the store, (short lip and all) I do this for about a week so the food they scrape out of the dish is not lost in the shavings and they are less inclined to look for it there.

New brooder pre-chick arrival. Used 1/2 in hardware cloth so I can eventually keep this in the barn, but kind of wish I'd used 1/4 in to keep pine shavings in, in the meantime daily sweeping!
