Brooder???

Some keep their birds on wire I have seen calls on it mainly, but I think it can harm their feet especially when so tiny. But you right it will sure help with water splashing. Maybe just coverall but where water and feed will sit. If you have nice warm days you'll be able to let those little ones out to enjoy the fresh warm air. It will help them acclimate quicker too also that shelving stuff that is like soft rubber that is easy to use and can be shook out and washed. I would like something like that to keep my hateful scovy's in when they go broody to break them. They are so mean to their flock mates at those times.

Since I cannot raise the light I figured I could put a guard around it like this. I am also checking the temperature now next to the wire.

Where the pen is open wire on bottom, I have used a solid floor under the wire for easy cleaning.
A length of plywood cut to fit makes a floor to walk on and just lower the plywood down and clean everything. When done replace board and a good cleaning is done in minutes without reaching inside.
Just get the little ones on solid ground so toes don't get pinched

I like the brooder! You could put rubber shelf liner over the mesh when they are really tiny if you are worried about their feet. Also, be careful with that low heat lamp. My silly ducklings have broken two heat lamp bulbs by hitting them with their beaks. My bulb had a wire cover over it and they still managed to make it explode.

I installed that wire cage around it because of that reason. And thank you for you comment and observations.

Just my personal opinion but if they get too warm inside they can always go out, or sleep in the doorway! They'll go where they want :) beautiful brooder i would love to have something more permanent.
