Brooder???

View attachment 1286840 Since I cannot raise the light I figured I could put a guard around it like this. I am also checking the temperature now next to the wire.

Please be careful. I don't know if it's the angle I'm looking at it or what, but even with the wire guard around it that lamp looks awfully doggone close to a lot of combustibles.

It is two foot tall and the temperature flose to the wire was just over 85 degrees. After a few hours. I am not using it yet going to wait a few days to put the ducklings in it.

This is my brooder. (I use a heat plate but just moved my chicks to the grow our own this morning). It’s in a 6x8 shed and is simply two sheets of Proplex floor protector (corrugated plastic) folded lengthways in half to give more rigidity and then clipped with bulldog clips to make a circle. The clips also hold the bird netting taut over the top. On the floor is just some cardboard and under that is an old heated blanket (for a single human bed!) because we had a particularly cold snap recently. Under that is the foam insulation mat from my Bestway hot tub (that’s not being used in winter). The floor protector is only £3 a sheet and being plastic can be cleaned and disinfected after use. This set up has always done me really well.

And that's great.....I'm not questioning the temp in front of the wire. My concern is how close the "ceiling" and to the pine shavings on the floor the light is. I assume you're saying that it's 2 feet high from floor to ceiling. Heat is going to build up intensely right above and below the lamp. Can you measure the temperature at that point immediately above the lamp and immediately below it...not on the outside of wire cage, just pretend that isn't even there. And remember too that ducklings love water....they splash and make quite a mess. The wire cage isn't going to stop flying fro of cool water from hitting that bulb, and that bulb can shatter.

I hate being a naysayer when everyone else is so enthusiastic about your brooder. And I think you did a great job on the build too. But heat lamps come with their own set of problems if a little paranoia isn't employed in their placement.

The top is tin roofing. There are no shaving under the lamp either it is a solid floor but yes it is wood. And I also plan on having the water as far from the lamp as possible.
