Broodies and their Babies

400

Broody with her mixed babies! Silkies, RIR and a cross breed.

Elsa (OEGB) with her 3 pekin (cochin) bantams and one precious booted bantam at the back. These were all girls (despite me being convinced the front two were boys).

Pixie (OEGB) with her first two hatchlings. The one on the left ended up being a partridge pekin/silver leghorn cross. These two were boys, and her third baby that hatched was a girl.

Sunflower with her three pekin (cochin) cuties - 2 boys and a girl.

She's got her eye on the camera for sure! Great picture!

These are so sweet! OEGB look to be such good Mamas. How well do they get along with large fowl and in enclosed spaces like a run?

I might consider getting a couple when it's time to add to my flock next year, but I would want them to be happy, so...

Ours are in with light breeds. I'm not sure how they'd go with really big girls because they are so tiny. They wouldn't need much space (being so teeny) if you had to house them separately. They are great little characters and ours haven't been grumpy broodies. They will grumble at you but ours never tried to peck us and they were pretty good about letting us handle the babies right from the start. We have a fourth but she doesn't lay much and hasn't shown any inclination to go broody. They are only a bit over a year and a half old though so she might surprise us (not that we can indulge them often, as much as we love having babies about). I just adore them.

My OEGBs have been wonderful broodies and mommas. One is a real B**** to everyone other than myself, but she's a great momma.

Here are my bantam chocolate orpington sisters, sharing the duties of raising the chicks. One of these girls hatched 4 OEGB's for me. The other hatched 3 bantam orps, while I hatched 8 in the incubator (I wasn't sure she was committed enough and didn't want to risk losing them). But they are raising them all together now.

That is what I suspected

They do look tiny, but they are on my "wish list". Good excuse to start begging for a new section and small coop

We have this little Booted Bantam called Hope who is broody. She's been broody for 10 weeks and was showing no signs of giving up. I'd brought her inside and despite the kids patting her and showering her with attention (and our son occasionally picking her up for a cuddle) she was still determined something was going to start peeping under her. So we caved and got her 4 Silkie chicks. She adores them and is such a sweetie she's letting us help out and handle them (and doesn't mind me taking a million photos).

(Hope was keeping her eye on the cat in this one - the cat was up on the couch).
