Broodies on eggs? Broodies with babies? Post here.

My Silkie hen "Foxy" had, at last count late this afternoon, six beautiful baby chicks. Still two more eggs to hatch (hopefully). She is our first broody and seems to be a great mother hen.

Well, everyone, Charlotte, my broody hen, has officially become a mamma! I checked on her tonite after work and THOUGHT I heard little peeps .... I took Charlotte off the nest and, low and behold, about 5 baby chicks! Then, right in the middle of oooh-ing and aaaah-ing over the cute babies, my roo, Leroy, snuck up behind me, jumped on my shoulders and PECKED MY HEAD!

Anyway, the chicks (or what I saw in the limited light) are gorgeous -- I'll try and take pics in the next day or so, as the weather was horrible tonite.

Someone asked a similar question earlier in this thread. If the chicks hatch, it varies for each bird. They will care for the chicks for a few weeks or more and then go back to laying.
As for if the eggs don't hatch? Well, I don't know. I have read about ways to "un-broody" your hen. I think she will keep sitting until she gets chicks otherwise.

Hope you get some more qualified persons answering this question. I will certainly post when my broody decides to lay again.

Thank you for answering. I should have started a new thread because I dislike the concept of hijacking a thread. I felt like this question fit into this thread sufficiently as it seemed like a rather general thread about broodies.
Thanks again.

My Silkie hen, Foxy has 6 little cuties. I removed the other two eggs this PM, after candling them and seeing nothing. I think she was relieved and she moved over to another spot in the "safe" area that we made for her and the chicks in the Silkie pen. Besides the hen, we have one other Silkie, Opie, the rooster. I have a question about the coloring of day old Silkie chicks. Most of these chicks are a very pale yellow, but a couple have a brownish area down their back and one has a sort of splash coloring with the brown and pale yellow. Is this normal for Silkies from two white parents? We do have a BO rooster, but have never seen him mating with Foxy.

Good luck! It's fun. I took mine off the nest, twice daily to eat, drink, go the the bathroom. Then she would hop back up and get back on the nest.

I had to put her in a crate - an old wall/vet crate made out of fiberglass, that has a door. The other hens kept coming in and trying to get her off the nest.

I have my girl in a plastic dog crate-I take her off 1 time a day at the same time and make sure she's back on w/i 10 min- it's only golf balls until friday-
1st time chickie mom for both of us- hopefully it goes right and I end up with fuzzy butts in @ 21 days:D

Here is our broody hen on her second clutch this year. The first 2 chicks were born on 2/14 and 2/16. Her second clutch started hatching 3/10 and another today! One little egg left to go! I saw this thread and wanted to share. The chick is not the broody's it is a BJG/BO cross.
