Brooding in the house

Chickens are dirty and smelly, even chicks. They create a ton of dust. If you clean and dust every day you could keep it down. But the dust seeps into crevices etc. I don't like chicks or chickens in my house other than for maybe the first week after they hatch....after that out they go to the brooder cage in the chicken coop. But that's just me. Like chickens, but to my mind they are pretty unsanitary and don't belong inside the house. I can tell when I've breathed in too much of their dust I develop a cough.

Your post reminds me of when I was 9 and visiting my uncle's dairy farm. I was in the barn and heard a noise above my head. I looked up to find a chicken in the rafters. Suddenly, to my suburban eyes, it laid an egg. How cool! The egg hit me in the forehead, along with the smell because it wasn't an egg. I cried out and my uncle and father came running into the barn. Both started laughing at me, uproariously. That didn't help my pride.. or the smell. My mother and aunt came to my rescue as I stumbled half blind into the kitchen. I can still hear the piglet that was penned up in the kitchen squealing as they cleaned me up. I hated chickens for many years.

I love the story you just told...Reminds me of the time I was walking to the mailbox with some letters and a Robin pooped right on my forehead. LOL

Your house sounds so interesting! I love historical homes.

Yep, chickens are dusty. I always let my granddaughter hold a chick. She just loves that. Of course we wash hands. But I do alot of sweeping up all that dust. They have this dander......I suppose if you had asthma or allergies, it could really bother you.

If you order your chicks from a hatchery, make sure you place your orders really early, or you may not be able to get the breeds you want. Sometimes you have to wait for months to get the chicks you want, if you don't order early.

Take care!
