our bo gracie just went broody again! is it normal for a hen to do this 2x in 1 year? we gave her 3 of her own eggs and 1 of hopie's ( gracie hatched hopie out of an egg from other chickens) we make sure she gets up each day to eat and drink. have lots of good stuff available to her.

Sounds perfectly normal. I've heard of birds brooding more than that in one year. I also have two Silkies who are brooding for the second time this year. They last brooded in April.

I have two who are brooding now DRIVING ME CRAZY!! It's been about 10 days when will it stop?? I tried putting them in separate wire cages with no nests but they liked it and would sit there "perculating" puffing out won't eat or drink. I pick them up numerous times during the day take them out front but they immediately run to the back want to nest. No eggs just brooding.
Help please someone give me some advice on how to get rid of this. Thanks!!!

my large fowl black cochin is on her second brood with eggs. I slipped some RIR's under her and a few silkies that i was holding to set in the 'bator. She's happy as a clam and gets her daily dose of dandilion greens and a chunk of bread. she is sooo mellow - just hangs out and watches everyone else and zones out.

I have 1 who just hatched her second round and 1 now sitting on her second round for the year....

I'm just hoping these 2 are done for the year.... I really don't want more chicks.... But I don't have the heart to break them.

I have 4 banty hens who are on their 2nd round of being broody. I'm waiting on round 3. It will be coming soon. They have a 100% hatch rate.

i'm with u dark unicorn. don't have the heart to deny her eggs. and i just love those babies.

we also don't need any more chicks but our neighbor has offered to take some. they realy enjoy ours so it's gonna work out & i'll still get to see the babies grow up.

at least we're not alone in the wounderful world of broodiness

I'm not sure there is a way to stop them from becoming broody. I had tried several 'tricks' in the past, and none worked. I have a silkie that keeps going broody. No eggs ever hatch because of no rooster. I just keep collecting the eggs and eat them. She gets up after a few weeks, then in a few more weeks, starts all over again.
Then, there is this game hen that chose to live here. At first she lived in my tree, then in the barn. Now she lives under the barn, she's been broody for months and months. Comes out every couple days, runs and squawks around, eats, drinks, and back she goes. Poor thing. I use to worry about them going broody like that, I thought they'd die or something, but they do get up and eat and drink.
So far, all the hens that I get from the feed store, never go broody. I guess when they are bred to be production hens, the broodiness is bred out?
