I'm not sure there is a way to stop them from becoming broody. I had tried several 'tricks' in the past, and none worked. I have a silkie that keeps going broody. No eggs ever hatch because of no rooster. I just keep collecting the eggs and eat them. She gets up after a few weeks, then in a few more weeks, starts all over again.
Then, there is this game hen that chose to live here. At first she lived in my tree, then in the barn. Now she lives under the barn, she's been broody for months and months. Comes out every couple days, runs and squawks around, eats, drinks, and back she goes. Poor thing. I use to worry about them going broody like that, I thought they'd die or something, but they do get up and eat and drink.
So far, all the hens that I get from the feed store, never go broody. I guess when they are bred to be production hens, the broodiness is bred out?
