Broody Australorp?

She still hasn’t laid an egg since being broody. No squatting any more either. I think she’s broken….not really, but Australorps are supposed to be solid layers. Maybe she’s on the two months on, one month off plan.

With days shortening the timing may be such that she may not resume until later, maybe not even until spring. That's more unlikely with a young bird, however not all birds read the manual on how-to-chicken.

When a hen is laying, they have a bunch of egg yolks developing, so one will be ready each day.

When a hen goes broody, she starts to absorb those yolks, as a source of food because she's not getting off the nest to eat as much.

After she quits being broody, she needs to get egg yolks developed again before she can lay again. Usually, the sooner you break her, the sooner she'll go back to laying. I assume it's a matter of how many yolks she's absorbed how much from.

She is about eight months old and it was like a half broody thing…she acted like it but then I put her in a wire cage that night, and the next day she was normal. Didn’t even try to go for the nest box. I’d say she was broody for all of a day and a half, max.

She’s still acting normal, so I guess she’ll start up again….

A little over a month and still no interest in laying. My fiancée keeps telling me he’s going to eat her if she isn’t producing, but no chance that’s happening. Tick tock.

Side note - the Austra White we have is probably the best layer in the bunch. Egg shell thickness, yolk to white ratio, daily egg at the same time every day…I don’t read much about them on here but she is a machine!
