Broody Goose in December?

Strangely there is no sign of the baby yet.

I hope that it hatches, those geese and I have been waiting for weeks! Im not sure how many weeks though, since I don't know the exact day she started sitting. When I candled the egg it was very far along and looked ready to hatch within a week or less...I hope everything is alright with it. I guess il candle it again to make sure.

I have an order of 25 chicks coming in the mail on the 9th. I was planning to brooder raise them but if the gosling fails to hatch, do you think she can adopt these? Can geese raise chicks? It would be so sad to see her sit patiently on eggs for so long if none of them hatched.

Not a good idea. Geese need water to bathe in, and good goose parents take their young for a swim. Which is fatal for chicks.

I´d go with the incubator. Agoose wouldn´t help them find the right food or anything, not a good idea really when you have the option. If the gosling has already died, or still doesn´t make it, she´ll most likely try again.

Well good news everybody! I just candled the egg an its doing just fine.

I saw movement in the egg and the air cell has increased in size by a lot since the last time I candled it. The air cell looks equivalent to the size that a chicken egg would be at day 18 of incubation. Im glad its doing well.
The egg looked a lot like this

I know that just because it's developing doesn't ensure it will hatch. So thanks for the advice on not letting her adopt the chicks. If the gosling ends up, for some reason, not hatching, I'l see if I can buy her some ducklings to raise.

I'l continue to keep you guys posted.

All looks good, good sized air sac, etc. I think the biggest risk now is that she won´t know what to do when it starts to hatch. I had one goose that killed the gosling just because she got too enthusiastic with helping it out! And some can sit heavy so the gozzies get crushed....so although it looks like your gozzie will hatch, it has a long way to go yet! I hope she turns out to be a sensible mum and does it all ok. You´ll have such fun watching them.

AND if the gozzie doesn´t make it, she´ll get over it and start again, as it´s still the breeding season she´ll likely have another go. One of mine lost the first lot for one reason or another, and the second try she got 100% hatch, 6 goslings. They´re big birds now. But sounds like the egg´s good....
