Broody hen laying on her egg! what is my first step!!

I am also new to the broody hen deal. Just had one hatch 5 about 1 week ago. Like @Chickengene said move her well after dark where you want her to stay. You can try opening the coop door in the morning to let others in with her you will just have to see what she does. Might put you back at square one if she gets run off the nest with the others coming in. If the others don’t phase her then I would let them come and go. You might want to put a few fake eggs under her where she is sitting and collect the eggs up for several days. After how ever many eggs you want to collect is completed.
Step 1 mark all the eggs you want to set.
Step 2 set all the eggs under her at the same time.
Step 3 check under her every couple days for broken eggs and to make sure she is not still adding more eggs.
When you set all the eggs at the same time they will all hatch very close together, usually within 24 hours.
If you let her keep adding eggs you will have a staggered hatch that may take up to a week or more for all of them to hatch.
I had other hens adding eggs under the broody with only one week until hatch time. That would have been a mess for sure if I was not removing all the newly unmarked eggs from the nest.
When marking eggs I prefer to mark the tips with pencil. That area seems to not wear off so easily.
What say you @aart?? Does that about sum it up?? @aart has been a great deal of help to many on this site including myself.
Good luck with your broody!!

Thanks everyone! I will purchase fake eggs and do exactly this. I didnt know you had to collect all the eggs then put them all together when your ready. I dont think she is truly broody but i will leave her with the roo in a separate and see what she does.

So my broody one had just started hatching when she became broody (hatched in december 2018). Its been two days/nights now that i pick her up at night to put her in the coop after laying in the dirt hole all day and theres no egg. Im not concerned as she had just started laying so it makes sence that she didnt lay an egg yesterday and today but she still sits in her dirt hole all day acting as iff shes sitting on eggs. Is this normal?

Oh and i kept an egg to put under her once i have a couple. Is there an ideal tempature that i should have firtile eggs at to keep them viable? Also how long do i have before the firtile egg is no more good?

Is she in that coop you showed earlier? But is setting on the ground instead of up in the nest?

Keep at about 70°F.
Anything less than 10 days should be good,
older eggs have less of a chance but still may hatch.

She is in that coop with the other silkies and the two ee's that my roo likes but none of my them understood the ramp thing they all lay and sleep on the ground. And during the day and or night i let them out to free range and shes been setting right by the garage in a dirt hole (chickens made that hole to dust bathe). She hasnt laid an egg for the past two days but still is broody and setting.

Sounds good :)

Hi everyone, just gonna do a little update here. I don't believe my hen was truly broody. She didn't stay on her eggs and would leave for the day not returning to sit on them. i know have an easter egger that is doing the same. I left her with her 4 eggs but again, isint regularly sitting on them so i will be taking them out today.

I guess there is no point in letting them try if they are not actually truly broody?
