I have been wanting one of my hens to go broody but so far none of the 18 have. Today I was given a new rooster and a "broody hen." She came with her clutch of eggs but no longer sits on them. I assume the long drive in a crate was the cause. How long before I can expect her to go broody again?

The long drive in the crate, the stress of a new location, any number of other things. It's impossible to say when she might go broody again. I had a buff orpington that went broody about 1 1/2 years ago, in a place where she was very vulnerable to predators. I moved her after she'd been setting for over a week. (I moved her at night - it's supposed to work better that way) Well, she flipped out, left her nest and has never been broody again.

Oh no! I hope I didn't devastate her that badly! :(

I have a hen go broody on me on time gave her two eggs and she killed them both. She has never gone broody again. I do have one that goes 3 to 4 times a year and I can do just about anything to her and she stay on the eggs. I have moved her and eggs 1 week before hatch day due to a storm and all was good.

If she does go back to her eggs will they hatch? Or has she been gone too long? Been off all day and its cool and rainy. Checked with flashlight she still wasnt on em.

Yep, it all depends on the chicken. I had a little bantam cochin that I think I could have moved every day and she'd stay on the nest. Some just aren't as dedicated as others.

What kind of hen is it? If she has any game in her she'll be back on a new clutch in no time. Just let her get used to the coop and new nest boxes and she should go broody sometime this summer. I would think that would work with any hen who goes broody often, but since I know nothing about the hen I am only guessing and going by my past experience.

Like I said I got her yesterday. I don't know anything about her other than she was sitting on her nest before he brought her. I guess I will just have to wait and see.
