Broody hen smashed hatching egg

Congrats...As a recommendation..Stop touching her eggs because she is providing the proper humidity to hatch them. All your doing is causing stress and interference. I never see my Chicks or how many I have till two days after hatch and she leaves the nest..

Sorry I'm a bit blunt although Momma can do this all by herself and stressing her is not needed. I understand your excitement but totally leave her alone to do what a Hen does..All you do is provide a feed and water station close to Momma and she will do the rest...Best wishes ...:frow

Just an update: It lives!

I don't mind bluntness at all. Before, I only touched them when she was off the nest and to clean out a busted egg earlier. I had just been messing with this one a lot after I heard the big "crack." I wanted to make sure it wasn't another messy crushed egg (I know she had a few not-developing ones there from when I candled around Day 11, hadn't candled other than that and had left it in just to be safe) and when I saw it was the one that had pipped, I got nervous.

I totally understand your excitement and nervousness hatching. I'm hatching incubated Chicks today and not my first time either..Still the little buggers drive me crazy. I don't interfere, although I wear out my rug to the incubator. I usually hatch all Chicks under Hens and incubate my Call eggs..I wish you all the best...:frow
