Broody Hen Thread!

I had a hen go broody after she laid her first eggs. Im not even lying but the egg was alittle bigger than a gumball. I cant show you pics because I have none of her eggs and shes broody again so yay.

Today is 22 days since I started counting my silkie sitting on the eggs. It doesn't seem any have hatched yet. Would they be behind schedule from the 3 day freeze we had and them getting a bit cold. The ones under her were alive last I checked, I think Wednesday or Thursday, and that was after the freeze.

I candled two that were on the edge of her body and they were both alive, one with an internal pip. So hopefully we will have chicks soon.

Great news. Sorry I didn't respond sooner to your post. I've spent the afternoon shaking off the adverse reactions to a new medicine. I doubt if I would have made much sense, LOL.

Eggs are surprisingly robust, especially later on in incubation. I just had a Welsummer hen hatch out 8 bantam eggs for me. On day 18 she managed to force open the door of her pen and stage an escape during her daily gorge and poo session. I found her on two eggs in another nest and her eggs chilled. I candled. Saw some mild movement and was worried. After her being back on the eggs for 8 hours, I candled again. Little devils were swimming all over the place. 3 days later she hatched out all 8.

I've read that sustained temp changes are more of a problem in early incubation than in late and the hens will actually cool down the eggs on occasion.

Good luck on your hatch! Keep us updated.

Congratulations, NCLS School.

I love your chick corral. Where did you find it?
Oxgord Pet Play Pen-ebay-app. $25-free shipping-45" diameter-2' tall (advertised as 1' tall). It has a zippered removable screen top and solid velcroed bottom, folds up, and easy to clean. My wife got me two to use as brooders. It will be great to move around the yard without the bottom. Can be staked in place. If you order one tell them Kimmi Nichols recommends it (maybe she'll get a discount on her next order).
