Broody Hen Thread!

Went to go put up my broody and her chicks. Couldn't fond them and then 20 minutes later I found them nested up in a flower pot. Haha

I just got back from candling 10 eggs...found two browns ones that must have been laid when she got up for a potty/streatch break so took them out (I'll keep them separate from my selling eggs just in case there's a "surprise inside". LOL)

My homemade candler was a toilet paper tube (with about an inch and a half TP still on it) and a mini mag light. I had a flashlight (mini LEDs) but it wasn't bright enough.

I was estimating this to be day 7 and was expecting to see small dot with veins but I saw about half of the egg in darkness on 7 or 8 of the eggs. Kind of like day 10 (middle photo) or day 12 on the Chicks are Here Egg Candle pixs thread.

I've had three eggs under my broody, I snuck another one under her today. Didn't seem to make a difference. Egg is from the same batch that is due to hatch on the same day. I'm thinking once they all start hatching, I may try and sneak a couple of chicks out there to her. That would make it easy for me..her taking care of the babies. :)

It's HATCHING DAY!
Went out to check on my broody Wellsummer, and heard the faintest peeping. One tiny voice declaring it's existence to the world! The entire world being, of course, the fluffy warm underside of Momma.
Still early, but only one little guy has made it out. Spots on a sex-linked. Plenty of time though, so we will see if we get more. Don't really need to add to the flock this year, so even if all we get is a little roo we have to find a home for, at least we get to watch her raise one chick.
Such a fun experience so far!

Hi everyone! I have a small problem and wondered if any of you had any suggestions. I have a broody bantam hen and I gave her 8 eggs to sit on, and then several days later ANOTHER of my bantam hens decided to go broody and they are sharing the nest box and eggs! The eggs are due to hatch next week, and I don't know if I should leave them together or divide the eggs and give them each their own box. I am a bit nervous about leaving them together because the second broody bantam (a golden Seabright) is normally very mean to the first broody, a very small mixed breed that looks a bit like an old english hen. They are sharing the box peacefully, but I am afraid once the chicks hatch they will fight and possibly hurt the chicks!

. Not sure you are the first to report a broody seabright they rarely go broody I raised seabrights for three years and had several hens and none ever went broody. as far as mean for a popcorn size bird they think they are ten foot tall my lil seabright rooster used to take on a Cochin 3 times his size they are fun lil birds as far as separate boxes go I think I Would only because I know how they are good luck
