Broody Hen Thread!

She's killed 5 more today!!! They have been outside all day and I would have thought she wouldn't kill anymore!!!!! I'm either going to kill her or sale her. I threw her out of the pen and see what happens by in the morning.
She has killed a total of 10!!!! I only have 5 left!

My broody BA is stomping on her chicks and killing them! She has killed 10 within the past week and a half! It's her first time brooding that I know of. She was a little over a year old when I bought her. I've out them uo for sale and now I hardly have any left to sell because she has been killing them off. I took them completely away from her permanently. I only put them up forsale because she had started killing them off. She even left 4 that were still piping alone and cold in the nest. I put them in the incubator then the temp. spiked up and cooked them.

Cute!!! And that's our Buff Orp.'s name too :)

My broody hen (chicken) hatched a duckling! The chickens are too old for there eggs too be very good, so I slipped duck eggs under her, and one hatched! I think more are still hatching, but so far I've only seen one.

Oh Jharper, I'm sorry to hear that! I have a broody, and had no eggs, so I let her sit on some unfertile eggs (actually, one turned out to be fertile) and got some hatchery chicks to slip under her. I saw her step on one of the chicks yesterday, and it was dead this morning. I also have seen her peck at them, but mostly at one that looks different (a different breed). However, she is also keeping them warm under her. I'm really worried about her abilities as I saw her step on another chick again today, but more on it's foot, not smack on it's body. It seemed ok where as the one yesterday was lethargic the rest of the day and into the night. It was in the nest when I found it dead this morning :(

I took the different looking one out, and will keep it by itself until that one egg hatches, which I stuck in the incubator... but it won't hatch until the 18th, and it's a bantam, whereas the one I took from my broody is large fowl. Hope they get along!

can a broody hen die if she doesn't Hatch any babies and just keeps setting on the nest? or will she eventually break herself of the broodiness? my hen is still setting. the last egg i was holding out for wasn't fertile. So i put 8 more under her today and yesterday. which means another 21 days..... :(
