Broody Hen Thread!

Here they are......had to force her to let me see them. Very cold here today!! This is Mallow and she has 4, her twin Marsh has 2 but, she is definitly the most annoyed and I am leaving her right now!!

Well I just put my chicks under my broody. She about killed one of them yesterday when I tried to do it in daylight so this time I decided to try in the dark and have her "wake up to hatched eggs and chicks". I hope it works! Gonna go check on the happy family in a little while, it's still pretty dark out there at 6:50, nobody's awake yet!

What chicken breeds are broody?
I have a blue wheaten Ameraucana sitting on some eggs right now. Other chicken breeds that are known for broodiness are cochins (especially bantams) and silkies.

I'm glad I found this thread! My Am is sitting on 11 eggs at day 10 today. I candled them yesterday and all of them seem to be developing, but there is definite movement in 5. I saw a heartbeat in one! I've got 3 EE eggs, 1 leghorn cross, 3 or 4 Barred rock cross, and the rest are barnyard mix out of my production reds. It's my first broody, and if any hatch they will be the first fluffy butts born on the farm! Halfway there!

Ive got eggs out there in a nest box. Sometimes my Wy is on them other times one of the ee 's. But mostly the Wy is on them. When I touch them they are nice toasty warm. When do I candle? They've been out there 5 days...what exactly am I looking for? What can I see in the first stages?

I can't remember if I have told you all yet that my hens only chick died the other day. I'm just waiting for her to go broody again so she can hatch out a duck.
