Broody Hen Thread!

The nest she is using is a basket I picked up at a thrift store for a couple of dollars. A lot of my other nesting boxes are dish pans from the dollar store. I also use cat and dog carriers for other nesting boxes. I was going to use buckets but the way I had them set up, the hens were to big to get into them. Most prefer the dish pans.
What's funny is the big rooster and 2 or 3 of the hens sleep all piled up in the dog carrier.

I was doing a head count one night and thought I had some missing hens, till I counted all the heads in the carrier. Crazy birds.

I'll mark the eggs in the nest next time she leaves it to eat. If more end up in the nest, I won't worry about it since I get nearly 16 eggs a day if not more. I'll also candle the eggs in a couple of days to see if any are developing.
Offgridhermit you said ""If more end up in the nest, I won't worry about it since I get nearly 16 eggs a day if not more "" Getting plenty of eggs has nothing to do with it----you remove ALL fresh layed eggs so your hen does not Have to Stress herself after the first few hatch---Knowing she has to get off the nest to feed the new, chicks and she also knows there are other chicks that are about to hatch---If you do not remove all the fresh layed eggs EVERY day from the first day she starts setting---you are going to have problems---chicks about ready to hatch that will die in the egg---This would Stress Me if I allowed that to happen. I set ALOT of hens---all their chicks hatch usually within 24hrs period. She leaves the nest with all her hatch chicks and does not have to stress over any unhatched chicks because I removed ALL fresh layed eggs daily from her nest. I do not have to Stress because there in no other unhatched eggs in her nest with partial developed chicks in the eggs. BUT as I say many times, Its your Chickens and You can raise them Any Way You want-----I am just trying to offer helpful info. Good Luck with All your Future hatches!!

Thanks for the info PD-Riverman, I shall remove any new eggs put into her nest. I marked the other ones so I will know what is new. I don't want her stressed out. So far she has left the nest every day to eat, drink and bathe in the dirt and free range for a while. I just hope her eggs didn't get too cold while she was gone from the nest.

This is a first time for me. ALL ADVICE WELCOME! I can only get eggs hatched by a hen, since I'm off the grid and don't have power to do it any other way. I want to rely on nature and God, and of course Darla the hen. ;)

That IS Nature and God. Lol! Broody's are the best!

My Orpington Hen ("Orpy") has gone to sleep tonight in the nest box, instead of on the roost as per usual.

She has been in the nest box, on and off, for a couple of weeks now, and for the past week I have found the nest FULL of her feathers.

I think she is going broody and I have been taking her out of the nest several times each day.

I think I'm losing the battle!

I am not one to want to put her in a cage and isolate the broodiness out of her, so I've saved up some eggs. Tomorrow I will put her in a new nest, with a heap of eggs, and see how we go.

This broody thing is catching, apparently. Third hen out of 6 to go broody in 6 weeks!

I do move all my broody hens---at night to a hatching pen where she is alone, with food and water and a little fenced in yard(2ftx4ft). Doing this gives me a better hatch because other hens are not getting in her nest and breaking her eggs, plus I then do not have to look under her daily to check for fresh layed eggs. I like the sound of your place--- being off grid. My place where my chickens are is on the back of my farm(1/2 mile from my house)---I have a camper set-up and its off grid. I am planning to build a Cabin there soon that will be off grid But I have alot of solar panels already set-up and working. They run my water pump and lights. The solar panels can run my incubators but I would worry that something would go wrong and I could loose all my eggs, so I got my incubators on-grid in my home so they can be monitored more closely. I have around 370 eggs in them right now as well as 3 broody hens setting on 27 more eggs. Good Luck with all your future hatches!
