Broody Hen Thread!

Ugg so sorry! They were due to hatch on the 29th today!!!!! Now that I have corrected my mistake........when should I start worrying.

Again I apologize for the mistake in the first post!
If they were due to hatch today I wouldn't worry until day 23, o Wednesday.Or even day 24. Which at that point you can candle them or do the float test to see if any of the eggs wiggle. And if so put them back in the incubator.

My chicks turned 9 weeks old today. The broody finally "left" them and is roosting with the flock tonight. I'll give the babies a couple more days before I start making them roost on the chicken ladder with the rest of the chickens. I'm tired of the babies pooping all over the nest boxes!

I think I have a broody sitting on some eggs.

I'm excited, and hope to be a chicken grandma.

She started staying on the nest Saturday. I hope she doesn't give up on them. That's one reason I got some Wyandotte, I heard they were good brooders and good mamas.

I stuck a few more eggs under her and I'm hoping some of them hatch.

Fingers are crossed.

This is what Daddy looks like. They should be some interesting looking chicks if they hatch.

Did you mark all the eggs under her so any fresh layed eggs can be removed Daily so you do not end up with Lots of problems? Or can you move her or fix her area so no other hens can get to her nest, but allow her space to get off the nest to eat, drink, etc?

I used a bucket as a nest early this year, the silkie hen/pullet was hatching her first brood, she left the nest for a drink half way through the hatching and three chicks followed her, they could not get back in the nest and died, if I use the bucket again I will bury it so it only sticks out of the ground half an inch.

The nest she is using is a basket I picked up at a thrift store for a couple of dollars. A lot of my other nesting boxes are dish pans from the dollar store. I also use cat and dog carriers for other nesting boxes. I was going to use buckets but the way I had them set up, the hens were to big to get into them. Most prefer the dish pans.
What's funny is the big rooster and 2 or 3 of the hens sleep all piled up in the dog carrier.

I was doing a head count one night and thought I had some missing hens, till I counted all the heads in the carrier. Crazy birds.

I'll mark the eggs in the nest next time she leaves it to eat. If more end up in the nest, I won't worry about it since I get nearly 16 eggs a day if not more. I'll also candle the eggs in a couple of days to see if any are developing.

I tried using buckets for mine as well but the hens were too big. Now I let them hatch the eggs in the hen house. After the chicks hatch they get their own dog carrier and stay in there at night until they are about a month old. During the day they get to roam around with their momma and the rest of the flock.
