Broody Hen Thread!

Here's my sweet broody Lucy, a Buff Orp. She's been broody for 2 weeks and 3 days, and we have another 8 days before the chicks I ordered her will arrive. I can't wait to go pick them up and give them to her! She looks excited for them too huh?

ok, y'all might laugh BUT, i have a beautiful silkie hen who has been broody for about a month and a half now. she quit laying & was the only one of my 4 chickens who was laying, so i didnt have any other eggs to give her to let her hatch.

My solution? Get her a boyfriend. I bought a rooster 3 days ago, and she couldn't come out of her nesting box fast enough. she has been flaunting herself around (like she used to) and it has been the greatest thing to watch!

I typically had to put on welding gloves and pick her out of her nesting box (the welding gloves are to prevent the terrible pecking attacks). And as soon as i put her down, she would go drink some water, and run right back to her box.

So, if all else fails, your hen wants a boyfriend :)

I would not worry about the eggs getting too cold. I have three broodies going at the same time-all have hatched their eggs and the temps have been betwen 15 to 25 degrees the entire time. The chicks are doing fabulous. Trust nature.

Do I contain my broody in a cage with water and feed so that the other hens cannot reach her or lay eggs in her nest or do I not container her so she is less stressed and able to go a return when ever she pleases but other hens might kick her out and lay their eggs??? help.

Aaaaarrrrrgggggghhhhhh!!!!! I had obvious development on day 10 and then on day 18. Now I am on day 23 and begining to loose hope. It has been cold here and I know my 2 mommas have only been off the eggs for about 10 minutes a day, to eat, drink and poop. They wont leave unless I forcefully remove them.

Someone please tell me that this just might work or should I try finding some day olds to foster them on????

So hard and very nerve racking at the moment. This is my first broodies and my first hatch!! Just looking for some good news or a plan of action!!
