Broody Hen Thread!

Our "missing" hen was found brooding far from our chicken yard on 13 eggs! After candling 1, they seem to be developing & I expect them to hatch at least by Wednesday! Pretty exciting stuff going on around here! Brumhilda is our first hen to lay her own eggs & go broody! (We have a broody on some shipped eggs that should hatch tomorrow, but we haven't hatched our own eggs yet!)

Wouldn't you know this is the only hen in my flock of 50+ that I don't know what she is? A friend of mine gave her to me after her 2 buddies turned out to be roos (she didn't want to split them up!). I *think* they might be at least crossed with jungle fowl, but am not sure. As far as daddy goes, they could be either of her rooster buddies, or a white Plymouth Rock we butchered a few weeks ago. Surprise! Lol! Here's a pic of my hubby holding her. We're open to any breed suggestions!

Maybe, but she's a cream color & lays cream colored eggs. Here's one of the roos that she hatched with:

I'm trying to load pics, but 2 of 4 eggs hatched today! Two (that were under the hen) quit, but 50% of the eggs from under the hen hatched! I'd say that's pretty good!

lost 2 of my mama hatched chicks today... i left the feed bin open without thinking, and found 2 dead in there, looks like maybe the cold got to them, they were only unsupervised for 4 hours of so, and they were in their pen at that point last i knew, well mama flew over and brought the babies with her and looks like the little bit of fluid at the top of the FF had something to do with it.... dang... down to 5.... tomorrow mama is getting her wings clipped and shes going back into an isolation pen within the flock until she learns to stay....

Awww...so sorry to hear that. I hope the rest make it. I have a broody coup inside my pen too in the warm weather and it works great. Also lets them be part of the flock without being vulnerable to the older birds picking on them. I break it down and store it when chick raising season is over.
