Broody Hen Thread!

Yes, i have noticed with broody hens it usually seems to be a case of flood or drought haha nearly all go broody at the same time, when you need them to still be laying or you have no broodies in sight and desperately want some. Contrary birds haha
 
I would move the mom and her nest at night time, baby chicks are very vulnerable even with a hen to protect them.

Our hamburg egg did not hatch, when I opened it the chick was gone/decaying. One of our little EE chicks did not make it through the night. It was weaker than the others from the start, and couldn't walk that well. I was going to bring it in under a brooder light and doctor it, but decided to let it stay with the mom. That decision did not work out for our poor little chick. We are left with four very healthy and vigorous chicks, and mom has them outside learning the ropes already.I know these things happen, but it is our first time losing a chick, so we are pretty sad. We have been very lucky in our time keeping chickens, so I guess it was just a matter of time. Poor little chicky.

I am sorry to hear this. These little chickens, they have such a big place in some of our hearts. I know some people just have them and do t attach, but since I got mine as babies, how could I not. They are precious. Sorry for your loss.

Your comment here is so sweet! I couldn't agree with you more! Being away during hatch time is torture! Consider me a crazy chicken person, like yourself.
I take it a a huge compliment, as I'm sure all us chicken grandparents do!

Four chicks is still pretty lucky!. You hear about people incubating a dozen or more eggs and none hatch, so getting the ones you did shows you are doing it right!

I have had 2 broody hens one a Batman she had 11 chicks 7 amerecauna and 4 barred rocks and a Jersey giant 2 barred rocks and 2 buff orps
 
I have a question for you experienced broody people. This is the first time my hen is hatching eggs and wondered if you have had concerns with eating/drinking/pooping? My girl has been on her nest...day 2 now and she gets up to move her eggs and adjust her nest, but hasn't really gotten up to eat and drink

She also has not pooped since Friday...nothing in her broody area...worried! Any insight appreciated!!
