U can only fit 3-4 under ur banty Cochin?? She must be tiny!!! I managed to put 6 standard eggs under mine...

I got some pics of the sweet girl and her 5 2 day old chicks but there is only 3 in the pic... The striped r my OE I bred. She also hatched a black one but I had put it in the bator. She has it now again that its doing better. Its a BA WelsummerX.

Apparently there is a difference in banty sizes...I bought her at 3 months of age and hoped she would be bigger than this. She is only 8 months old, so she should fill out a bit more.

The other half sister is bigger, but not broody yet...I'd have to have her sit still to figure out how many.

I might fit 5 with Rosie, but I don't think they'd be covered well enough....so I'm sticking with 3 for this first hatch, hoping for at least 4 on her second brood....and that she grows in a bit.

But if she is a good mommy, I don't mind working in small batches. That's why I've got 3 little broodies. (I do however miss my wonderful Oma-San, she was good for 5 to 6, and a great brooder.)

BTW: I am talking about large to extra large standard fowl eggs. Right now Rosie has 1 extra large and 2 medium large eggs under her. I could fit another bantam size egg...so ideally I think she will handle 4 large eggs.

Now that I think of it my "banty" could be half standard. Her sister is much smaller. But she is much fluffier than her sis...

Sky finally hatched some :3 two so far. A Silver lace Wyandotte/cochin cross and an Easter dot (Wyandotte /easter egger) who I am not sure of color.

Things are going better today. The hen that took an extended break while her eggs were hatching eventually returned to her nest to sit again. I gave her a few eggs back but left the ones that were pipped in the incubator. Two hatched last night and were returned to mom. The other two hatched early this morning and went out with her after I saw that the first two seemed to be doing alright.

The other hen (who killed her first to hatch yesterday) is still glued to the nest. I heard some peeps and saw movement under her this morning. :)
