Broody Hen Thread!

Mine hatch in the pens, along with the other broodies, the non broodies, and the rooster. I haven't had any problems. I have even seen my d'uccle rooster covering chicks while the mommies were foraging
they are the only two hens in that coop. My others have a bigger standard size coop. As I will be adding a bantam Roo but want to hatch pure breed eventually . Sounds like I should just watch and see how it goes. Unless someone has a different experance.

How cute to have a Roo take over mommas spot for a bit.

Please explain what you mean by "chicks grafted to her..."
Thank you
Grafting chicks to a broody means you let them be broody for a while and then at night you take away the fake eggs and slip in the chicks from the feed store under her. It has always worked for me. They take care of them as if they hatched them. You should cup the chick in your hand and slip them in from the back so the broody does not try to peck your hand as this could frighten the chick so she is scared to bond to mama. You do this one by one. When I do it the chicks are chirping up a storm and then contented silence. I am not saying this works for everyone but it has for me so far.

h but she cant catch them.... they are in a big huge fenced run that is secured very well...
Even with that in mind you should consider it from the perspective of your birds feeling they are being chased by a predator....that isn't a fun game to play when you are a prey animal. To each their own, but *I* would not allow that sort of behavior in my dog w/out a correction because if one of your birds ever gets loose you want them to know that chase is not allowed.

I finally couldn't wait any longer and lifted up an ornery broody to see if both eggs hatched and yes they did!

Two little angels! One (obviously male) is twice as big as the other (formerly known as "dud" egg) but both appear healthy. The runt chick also looks male, he is very small so I hope he does okay.

Broody hen is already peeved at me for bothering her this morning so I will wait until later today to snap pix, hoping when the temps warm up the chicks will start peeking out from under her.
Congratulations Sonya! I bet they are so adorable, cant wait to see them.

least with my last broody he was. She allowed only him next to her chicks.
I have 3 broodys , and 9 in incubator for the same date as others. Only because I wasn't sure if ine of the clutch so put together had all fertile eggs. Since my bantams can't cover much. Luckily all 5 are growing. I still have not candled my other two broodys.

I also had my Australorp hatch 9 3 days ago. It will be Chicken city next week at my place. I'm kinda worried , I'll be running from coop to coop too incubator
