Broody Hen Thread!

Can't find this info anywhere. My broody hatched 2 out of 3 and I have some in the incubator. I only want to keep 1 of her 2 as 1 isn't my desired coloring. Can I switch her outside with an inside baby and plop one of hers that I'm not keeping in the hatcher with the others? Or will it need to be separate due to contaminating the sterile incubator?

Do you have a brooder set up for the bator chicks? If so, I would put it there. I am assuming the others are hatching right now, as well? You shouldn't have any trouble with the hen accepting the switch as long as they are all brand new babies.

Sure. Just worried the outside chick might give the incubator born chicks something. I feed them organic feed. If I do this, should I switch to medicated?

Wow PD; what is your Mother Hen made from? Great idea! Love your broody pen system-need to figure out one for us. New to brooding attempts-not working so far. Sue

I am in the process of reading this thread, but am only to 3600 out of 8600+, so I am just going to ask my question for sage advice now and keep reading to catch up!! I have a broody Ameracauna locked up on day 10 in what we call the "guest coop", two days ago a SLW just went broody on that days' eggs (3 probably) in the main coop. My problem/quandry is I only have 4 nest boxes total between the two coops but I have 5 hens if they all choose to go broody (1 more Ameracauna and 2 other Wyandottes). Also, my chicken co-owner said there were no eggs yesterday so I am assuming the new eggs were laid but they are now under said broody so a day off hatch time and today's will probably be there too. Should I try to move her to the guest coop and mark her eggs to tell them from the first broody's in case they would get into an egg stealing war? Or should I just mark what she has under her now and just leave her be, but have to bug her every night to get that day's eggs? The nest she chose I'm sure is the favorite one (I don't get it, they are exactly the same :p). Help! TIA, Carrie ps I have a roo, so expecting eggs r fertile.

These two broodies are sharing a hoop coop and raising their 9 chicks together. The Blue Copper Marans hen apparently thought the second broody was infringing on her parenting. The babies are a week old in the picture, but only 3 ventured out that day. I'm letting them out for a few minutes each afternoon, but it has been so wet here, that I don't want to leave them unattended. The brown chick is a chocolate Orpington, and the two yellow striped chicks are Jubilee Orpingtons. They also hatched 1 Lavender Orpington, 2 more Jubilees, 1 white Orp, and 1 Blue/Black Splash Orp and 1 more Chocolate. All the eggs are from English Orp lines, so everyone think pullet!!

This hen is a blue copper marans/ BO cross.
