Broody Hen Thread!

X 2. BUT serama and Japanese bantams are even more broody inclined. I have three serama pullets that have finished raising their third batch of chicks and are now working on their fourth clutch. The three pullets, all, are one year old on May 1st. My Japanese pullet has started brooding at 5 months 1 week of age. Indeed, who needs an incubator when I'm about ready to stand out in the coop yelling, "STOP THAT". HAHA[/COLOR)

OMG that is too adorable, I did not know they were that broody. As I am telling myself, self, you DO NOT need any Seramas!

Happy Easter all

Went out to check on Puff and her babies and I could not believe she has taught them to roost at just over a week

I didnt sleep thinking that one of those babies was going to fall off during the night and freeze to death! Well they are all fine this morning.....
These kids, they are all learning life way too fast.

Ok now I am thinking I should just remove that roost from the brooder area. I just cant stop thinking that the babies are not getting enough warmth at night. They are a little over a week and she has seven under her. She only goes up at night. Anyone have an opinion on this?

I was wondering about letting the mama chicken out before the chicks hatch. If she wants to come out, should we let her? How long should she be out for?

If it removes easily I would pull it for another week, ours go up at about 2 or 3 weeks, but there is a sand shelf built in to our roosts so a lot more room for them to get under her...then again, our average temperature is probably quite a bit cooler than yours is.

We allow our hens to decide when they want to come out and for how long...I have had hens out on day 20 without problems and even a rare one on hatch day. Trying to block them in would probably cause them to stress out and pace trying to find an escape, that could be disastrous if she tramples eggs.
I don't worry till well over 15 minutes during cold weather and over 30 minutes when warmer out.
