Broody Hen Thread!

When my serama's eggs didn't hatch I gave her three EE eggs. Unfortunately the first chick to hatch and become active lifted the 10 ounce broody so high she was unable to keep the other two eggs warm. I found the second egg that had pipped cool to the touch and the chick inside nearly dead. We tried an assisted hatch but too late. The third egg had not pipped yet so just in case...I put the egg under another broody hen. It hatched the next day and was returned to the original foster mom. Just a few days old now, the serama is having a hard time brooding the chicks. A heat lamp is now nearby.

I doubt that it was the sex, how old were they when she started to favor the roos? Buffy took care of the chicks for 8 weeks and tried to keep all of them underneath her on the roost. It was quite amusing!
the grey with red neck is the ligher chipmunk at the front, the only egg hatched from our brown, the 3 darker and the black came from our black

IT wasnt long after this photo was taken, at this age they were already all over the garden doing their own thing, so about 6-8 weeks

usually dark eggs are Marans, or welsummers especially big ones. It is hard to candle, TRY NOT TO CANDLE TOO MUCH. don't give up on the dark ones too early, I had one I could not candle, and assumed it was not developing, but left it with the hen and got a chick.

had a white faced whistling duck land in the garden yesterday upsetting the chickens, they seem pretty scared of it as they were watching it in a tight bunch and would avoid it when it came near, the goose keeps hissing at it when it gets near and changes direction, i even saw our old cock run from it. today it went close to the broody bantam with her chicks and she chased it off, but tonight when i looked to see if i could find it and get its ring number, this is what i found,,, it managed to squeeze through a 3" gap that only the hen can get through, the bantam cock cant even get through that gap.

Just what you always wanted, right?

Is it hurt or just tired and cold and needing a place to rest? Poor thing.

seems fine, offered it wet bread and chicken food when it 1st landed but it wasnt interested, just wanted the company i think. no idea what its been eating today, managed to trace where the ring came from and its a registered bird, just need to msg them with the ring number and see what happens,

i read they jointly rear their young, maybe thats why its in with the chicks, i think it could be a boy by its colouring, and could well have species issues lol

A second serama broody hatched two EEs and a serama chick today; I pulled the chicks as they hatched and none DIS.

Ok so take two on separating my 3 broody hens, I built a 3 separate cage today directly across from the "favorite" nest box after taking all 3 broody outside to their favorite dust bath place this afternoon. Then I brought each one back to "her" new nest site. All 3 have stayed in their new nest boxes all day and have all bedded down in them with plastic eggs under them. My hope is that everyone stays in the new boxes so that tomorrow night which will be day 17 I can move 18 eggs out of my incubator into their nest and let the girls hatch them. Here are the pictures of the new nest box though I guess really I only have 2 new nest boxes since I let Limpy my turkey hen keep hers.
