This is going to sound silly but I've never done this before so have to ask

I had the same idea for my BO broody in that I have a crate that is just like the one you show. Did you just make it as friendly as possible (put it in the cage, add litter and food etc.) and then put the eggs in the crate and shut her in there and she took to the nest?? I tried the same thing - just not in the confines of a cage - & my broody snubbed her beak at the thought.

Darn, wish I had seen this thread! What a great idea.

I just posted in chicken behavior about my crazy broody for advice. If anyone has a minute, take a look at my post about my gold laced wyandotte. Thanks!

That is actually a dog pen, not a crate, so it's 2'x4'. To move her I got her attached to her eggs by leaving her in the nest box for first few days. Then, I set up the pen in the coop and waited until it was late and DARK. I just picked her up off the nest and put her in the new pen, and then slipped the eggs under her. I could tell she got up at some point in the morning because there was poop in her water, but when I checked on her again at 6am she was back on the nest and hasn't budged since! I usually have to place her back in the pen after her break because she gets fixated on dust bathing, but once she sees her eggs she heads straight towards them.

So yes, I did make it as friendly as possible. She has food and water within a neck stretch and room to move around if she needs to poop (she doesn't though, I have to take her out). I'm planning on letting her raise the chicks in there as well if the other girls are friendly, just have to put chick bumpers so they can't get through the bars

What breeds of chickens do you have? You may have a rare broody.

I have 2 EEs and 1 Copper Maran. Going to increase the flock after a recent predator attack.

I have heard of both EE and Marans going broody.

My light Sussex just hatched 5 Black Copper Marans but we lost one:( looks like that is all we will get the others are not looking good. She is a very good Mama and is letting us see them and pet them without getting mad at us!
