how many eggs could i sit under a broody bantam silkie? i also asked this question in another thread but never got a reply... how do i know that my rooster is fertilizing the eggs? he is a very timid roo and i don't see him mount the girls very often and if he does i dont think he is..um.. completing the job? lol also could i put a polish egg under a bantam silkie or is that too big!? sorry lots of questions, i am always having my bantam silkie girls going broody so ready to put it to some good!

Not sure about the eggs...but probably 6-10? The only way to know if the eggs are fertilized is to crack them open and look for a bullseye. They hold sperm for 2 weeks so check an egg and then if it's fertilized stick the rest under her. At 7 days you can candle the eggs to see if they are clear or not. And yes you can put a polish egg under her...just probably not as many as other silkie eggs

can't wait!! just checked one of the silkie eggs and it is fertilized!! so cool, the one i have in mind i know will be a good mom because she had a surrogate... umm it was actually the rooster that fertilized her now, now that i think of it. Kind of gross!! lol I guess they aren't really related, she just adopted him! ha i know the chicken world has a little different views on incest

I recently had two hens on the nest hatch out 8 babies all was fine for a week then hens went to war had to remove one but since then momma and babies are ranging all over the pasture. These are bantys so very tiny Don't tell them. They are in with BCM and Wellies all the big guys give them free rein. Don't even look at them

So, a friend gave me this dog house that I was going to use for my broody. DH and i were looking at it and thinking about pop doors, ventilation and clean out door, and before I knew what was happening he had pulled off half the siding and is rebuilding it. I'm sure it'll be much better but Bobbie's eggs are due to hatch any day now. if we get something ready this weekend can we put her in it, or is it too late to move her? Can we move her after the hatch? Thanks everyone, I don't mean to be such a dope, I've just never hatched before.

I would really love to have one of my hens go broody but they show no signs of it ever happening:( So eggs are in the incubator due any day. Is there a breed that is more likely to go broody?

Well, now I have a Splash Marans hen going broody. I reached under her to get any eggs she was sitting on and she took a chunk of meat out of my arm! And she isn't normally like that.
