Broody Hen

    I have always hears that there is no silly question if you don't know the answer... So here it goes... [​IMG]

    Does a broody hen still continue to lay eggs?

    Nope.

    Once they truly go broody, they quit laying.

    Some start laying as soon as 3 weeks after the chicks hatch.... others can take over 2 months.

    That depends -

    Basically the answer is no but ... I've noticed that our hens start acting broody while still laying eggs. They only stop laying eggs when they have what they consider enough. Who knows what that is.

    The pattern is that they start to linger on the nest after they've laid an egg. They may or may not get off. But they'll keep laying eggs until they are in 'hatching mode'. But as Mahonri said, once they are are at that point and they are in 'hatching mode' they don't lay eggs.
