Broody Hen

I’m in southern NSW. Not going to let her breed as we are country NSW I don’t have the area to breed her in as everything needs to be fixed proofed. Just going to have to let her sit it out and maybe if it keeps occurring as frequent try to advertise her in local buy and sells

Have you tried giving her a few dunks in cold water? Do it for a few days, and it might work. It kind of worked for my Buff Orpington. She sat on the eggs a few more days, but she got off. She even broke a egg she was sitting on and got all sticky! (That was not the most fun thing cleaning up) If you visit daily, I'd just collect the eggs as soon as you see them. My hens haven't been consistently broody, so I haven't exactly experienced full on broodiness. Good luck with your hen!

Never heard of this before do you just dunk from her legs to neck or her whole person as long as it doesn’t hurst her I would give anything a try

I know this is not my post but I will reply because I had another thought along those lines.

The idea is to cool down her chest area to hopefully cool down the hormones and broodiness which is why a raised crate is suggested, more to get the airflow happening and cool her hormones. I have not needed to try the dunking myself or the following but may be worth a shot with your determined girl.

Others have used an iced water bottle [or similar] in the nest under the bedding. So, she would 1. not want to sit on the nest or 2. if she did sit on the nest, the iced water would aid with the chest cooling process.

Thank you for your feedback I will go out now and try doing this now. I went out a few minutes ago and she fluffed up triple her size so looks like harsher action is required for my broody girl

Your "jail" won't work ... WIRE CAGE will work but needs be be elevated at least a foot off the ground so air can circulate under her. Put her food & water in the cage, keep the cage in the coop. The longer she's broody, the harder/longer it will take to break her, I know went through this with 3 Blue Wynadottes last year. When they went back to their owner they went broody, she let them hatch which still didn't break them. She tried breaking them but it got too much work so she rehomed them.

You're in Australia so while our/USA weather is cool, you're in the Summer so it's warm & that's when they go broody, the warmth. I've heard of some putting ice under her, I've read about the cool baths but I know the WIRE CAGE elevated works, if necessary put a fan to cool her underside off.

IF you must rehome her, there are those looking/wanting broodies to hatch their eggs. Good luck.

I had no trouble in the past jailing her on the floor. I don’t have a wire bottomed cage. I.have read in comments that this is what is needed Looks like if she continues I might have to re home as it’s kinder for all

Was the water ice cold? It needs to be pretty cold to cool her down, and it won't work on the first try. Keep doing it and see how it goes, but if it doesn't work out, it's your call on what to do with her.
