Broody Leghorn

I have a broody leghorn! She’s from Hoovers Hatchery stock, hatched last spring. Here she is on her practice eggs.

We gave her 6 real eggs and they are due to hatch May 26th. A couple of times she’s gone back to the wrong nest after leaving to eat but she’s tolerating me placing her back on the right nest. So far she is doing really well! I’m so excited to have a broody Leghorn !

As a kid I helped at an egg production farm - old fashioned with large barn/coops and wooden nest boxes. The lady had a smaller pen for broody hens. Through the summer there were generally a half dozen or more leghorn hens in there. It happens, and they can be successful mothers.

Newly named Popcorn has 2 chicks! We are still waiting on 2 more of her eggs to hatch.

Farm had a half dozen brooder coops with large kerosene heated brooders in the very center. Chickens would roost in the trees all summer long, and as they came into lay I would help catch them at night and move them to the laying houses. The lady gave my family many of the cockerels that came with the sexed pullets. Leghorn cockerels make great fryers. Lots of memories were made at Hills Over Farms.

Her hatch went great, 4 chicks hatched, and she mothered them for 4 weeks, which is about average for my flock. Just yesterday she spent a lot of time on the nest so she may be going broody again, but this time with a friend

This is awesome to read, I too have a broody leghorn (on day 3) and she is still going strong. How did the rest of the hatch turn out? Any pics of Popcorn and babies?
