Broody now!

im kind of rethinking letting my broody incubate my eggs. she gets off to drink and eat but she takes so long that the egggs get cold.im afraid this will make for bad hatch rates or none at all

What are your temps running where you are in Alaska? I had a broody in December that had a pretty good hatch...I can't remember if it was 7 or 8 out of 12. My outdoor temps were lows in the 30's (or lower) and daytime was probably no higher than 50.
I didn't use a heatlamp but maybe you rig a one over the nest if you are worried?

I have one that is starting to zip!
I couldn't wait until my usual time to go and feed my broody. I went out with a flashlight and when I came up to the nest, I could hear my broody do the Mama cluck.
Now to leave her alone....the hardest thing to do.

I had a Buff Orpington to go broody on yesterday also. Not sure how many eggs are under her because I noticed her in the nesting box on last night. Will check her today and will probably add more eggs. What do you think the max number of eggs to put under a Buff Orpington would be? Temps in Louisiana for the next 2 weeks will range from 79 to 87 degrees.

My Broody List for the last 30 days:

Broody # 1 – Buff Brahma – hatched 5 babies
Broody # 2 – Buff Orpington – hatched 6 babies but caring for 2 additional chicks that hatched late from another broody chicken that
didn’t want the chick and from a duck that hatched a chick. (A chicken snuck in to the duck’s headquarters and layed an egg.)

Broody # 12 – Buff Orpington – don’t know how many eggs she is setting on. Found her last night
Broody # 13 – Turkey – was setting on 13 eggs but chickens attacked eggs killing 8 babies. Only 4 survived and 1 egg didn’t hatch. Turkey hatched a chicken. Don’t know who snuck in to the turkey’s nesting box.

I’m averaging a broody every other day. Anyone need a broody hen?
