Broody RP turkey hen ... QUESTION!!!

13th day! I managed to get three eggs away from Dot and only received a slight hand wound. We candled them and all of them have babies in there! Even before candling..you could feel the difference in weight right away. I marked the three I candled and put them back.

Very exciting

IF this becomes a habit of having to do combat with this turkey lol to save your skin think of getting some welding gloves they are thick leather and long think of it as turkey proof armor LOL.

Just an Idea.

I am trying to leave her alone..I swear it. Gloves would have been a smart thing to do, I'm not sure if I would call my behavior since I got this turkey smart at all! I am turkey/chicken crazed...and the whole babies coming thing is not helping. Maybe after this first experience..it won't be such a distraction for me.

I know what you are saying when I first got my bunch of Chicks I fretted over them and worried trying to do for them but trying to not over do things as well.
Then you get them up to adults and your proud of what you have accomplished and a predator takes half the flock.
I had forethought to have Incubated some before this to have replacements when I got my Poults to raise together.
And now being new to raising Turkeys Bourbon Reds it has started all over again with the fretting and being worried and the learning all over again

Best of Luck to you.

The two baby trukeys look great and are living outside with Momma. I am petrified some stupid animal will get them before they can grow up. They are so precious!!! I am going to put some new smaller holed fencing in the coop too because right now they love squeezing through the chain link and playing where Momma cannot protect them. When I candled all of the eggs that were still in the nest, most of the chicken eggs were clear, about five good and the other turkeys dead too. She must have come off early after I had gone off to work and by the time I got home, they were cold already ... too late to save any of them. but since I started this thread, I have had my pheasants hatch, my guineas and my buff silkies. :) It's been a good week! :)

Glad to hear it! I didn't candle them all...Scott kept telling me I was going to scramble them..he wanted me to let them be.LOL...like that's gonna happen! I noticed he was in the closet with me looking though. We really are enjoying all this =)

It's hard not to want to stare at them and wait. But that proverbial watched pot never boils!!! LOLOLOL

Question:

Dot came off her nest yesterday. she took a drink of water ate about 4 pecks of food and then walked out into the run and immediately had a blow out of watery dark green poop. Pecked the ground a bit and went right back inside to her nest. Is this because she is not eating much and holding it for long periods? Should I be concerned? It's the first time I have seen her leave her nest in 14 days...I'm sure she must have while I was at work or something...but that was the first time I've seen it.

My hen didn't come off that darn nest for what seemed forever. I noticed that her stool was not normal either, but I chalk that up to abnormal feeding and water and then not much passing through the system. She looks great now and back to eating normal while she stares at her two babies and clucks and coos to them. It's really cool. :)
