I didn't mean to ruffle feathers! HA! Get it? anyhew...

I did do a search on brother/sister/bloodlines/breeding and didn't find what I was looking for so I would also like to see the link to the other thread.

No, I don't really know who the parents of my mini flock were. I now understand (thanks Chix-in-Ga) that because all the chicks came from the same (local) breeder, that does not mean they are true siblings, more like step siblings.

Thanks for all the help BYC'ers!!

Would my degree in Molecular Genetics and 20 years research experience be at all helpful?

God knows you can't learn ANYTHING from reading or talking to more experienced people. How many on BYC have actually line bred birds?

Oooo somebodies hackles are up..

I was pointing out what I have noticed.. If you think that you fall into the catagory that I pointed out, then there is nothing I can do about that.. If you re-read my post with an open mind maybe you will see what I was really saying..

I do not know how many people have line bred birds, sorry.. but if they would introduce themselves as someone who does it, I will not dispute their findings.. but if they say I heard or I read or I think,,,, without any research, sorry,,,,,,,just rumors to me..

Um,can we back upa bit? You do not have to have done linebreeding to have researched it and know the possibilities of brother to sister. I have done it, however, siblings and half siblings. It does intensify good AND bad traits, so you should have excellent examples of the breed in both sides to do it and not have too many off traits pop up. For instance, beardlessness in
Ameraucanas. Even if neither is beardless, if they both have it in the background, it will pop up in some of the chicks.

EDITED to Add: Does that mean you should never do it? No, but you may have to cull more. Will you get three headed monsters? nah

OK, I was not going to get specific, and I do not want to make anybody angry.. but this particular post is not 100% correct. If this would have been the only reply it would have been what I would call misinformation..

don't take it personnal Horsejody.
If I am wrong I will retract and I already apologize to you.. but I am betting you have little or no experience with advanced line breeding. am I wrong??

Yes, you are very wrong.

We all need to try to remember that we are not always right and understand that other people have different ideas and experiences. We should all try to be the bridge to help other posters glean knowledge from our experiences and not be the troll under the bridge.

The original poster sounds like somebody that wants a simple operation. I doubt that they are interested in a large number of culls to get healthy birds.

I have French Copper Black Marans; I got my eggs directly from Bev Davis. Anyone with Marans or that knows of them knows Bev to be one of the most respected Marans breeders (if not THE most respected) in the U.S.

Bev ONLY line breeds. She has pure lines in her stock. She vehemently defends line breeding as the very best way to keep stock pure and hold conformation (and in the case of Marans, egg color) characteristics true.

Just putting this here by way of information.
