Hello. I was making brunch today and cracked open one of my Barred Rock's eggs to find this brown, solid, yet somewhat squishy (think the texture of a chicken liver) mass inside the egg.

3 of my hens (including this one) are older ladies so a little blood spot here and there doesn't bother me, but this seems very unusual.

My first thought was worms so I cut it open. Doesn't look like worms to me but I'm no expert.

It is about 2-3x the size of a corn kernel. I couldn't find anything like this searching the threads on BYC. Any clue what this is? Should I be concerned?

Looks almost like a lash egg encapsulated within the normal egg.
There was also a normal white and yolk in this egg. Everything else looked normal except this was in there. There can really be a lash egg within a normal egg?

If so, should I be concerned about salpingitis?

I would treat for salpingitis to be safe. That she's still laying normal eggs is very encouraging. It's a sign that the salpingitis is in early stages and might be cured with an antibiotic. What do you have on hand?

Thank you. All I have is enrofloxacin. Will that do?

Okay. I actually think I need to discard this and order more. It looks cloudy and has a strange texture.

When I do get more, how do I know how much to give? The directions on the bottle say 2cc per quart of water daily for four days, then 1cc for three more days. I can't give it in the water because I only want to give it to the one hen. How much do you think I should give when giving directly into the mouth with a syringe? Half the dose maybe?

How will you obtain the antibiotic? I you are able, you might select amoxicillin which can be given in one pill per day without waste or recalculating a dose. If you have an aquarium supply shop, you can get fish mox 250mg or order it online. https://www.kvsupply.com/item/aqua-mox-250mg-capsules-100-count/P06184/ Give for ten days. Pop the pill directly into the beak.

Even better! Last time I had a chicken on antibiotics, there were times when they would move their beak right as a shot the dose in, so they probably only got a partial dose sometimes. This sounds much easier.

Thanks so much!
