Supposed to get 5 inches of snow tonight into tomorrow. im so done with it.
Boskelli that poor cat.whoever dumped him should burn in hell
I hope they do and that I'm there to stoke the fire....here's Barney, he is very friendly, smart and personable. He seems to be enjoying upstairs in the barn. I made him a bed and he was sacked out all afternoon poor thing. Eating and drinking well. :)

Love the pic of Barney.
It has been uber cold for our region in Texas. Got down to 16 a couple of nights. The poor animals had frozen water. I had to get alternate watering methods each day. the chickens ended up drinking from large bowls that I had to change out every day- the water froze solid in them. The nipple waterer is frozen solid as is the fount waterer. LOL I see you folks in the north rolling your eyes. We are just not equipped for this kind of cold.
The dog water bowls are on the patio and they have frozen too - those don't usually freeze. I have to keep the food and water for the dogs outside- otherwise, they would just stay in the house and not do their business outside. They usually go potty, then get a drink and a bite and scoot back into the house real quick.
I need to clean out the coop, but wonder if it would be better to leave the droppings in the pine shavings for awhile- does it help generate heat? I don't like it to smell and certainly don't want any illnesses. Waiting and hoping for 50 degree weather this week end.

 there's the eye roll for you! If it's going to stay cold outside you could get the dogs a heated water bowl - one less to constantly change out :)
I would leave the poop and bedding to pile up a bit - you're right they do generate a little heat and in the chilly weather every little helps.
We are supposed to be at 0 with wind chill to -25 tomorrow, so I got Barney a heated water bowl and we have an old army sleeping bag doubled over his 'house' so he should be all set.
Unfortunately, there's nothing to be done with the outside coop water supply, so I will be dragging my frozen bum across the Arctic tundra 3x/day...do I hear a violin playing??

I'd be cautious about ammonia fumes with soiled bedding. I clean out my coops each morning no matter what the weather/temps. My birds huddle up with each other in freezing temps. One of them sleeps in a nest box.
My waterers only had thin ice this morning, easy to stir it up. Gonna be the same tomorrow morning.
In winter, my birds roost toward the "western" side of the coop because that's where it's warmest when the sun goes down. In spring it's the "eastern" side where the sun rises and warms them up sooner.
During the hot summer, they are all spread out on the roost lol.
Have yall noticed that also?

BBBRRRRR Boskelli1571. How DO you do it? I will be getting a heated water bowl for the furbabies. Never really needed one til now. As for the chickens, let the poop continue until the weather warms up- maybe a few more days- hopefully. I think if it got down to wind chill of -25 at my house, those chickens would be living in the spare room.:D

It will be cold here tonight. Everyone got extra shavings and whatever I could do. But I had to really get a feel for what you really cold guys are going through-so I bought the first season of Fargo, and yes it does demonstrate cold very well!

Lolacan thats really bad what ur parents are doing. Im so so sorry you and your daughter and grandchildren are going thru this

There's more today and I get the feeling that we are both being manipulated. I'm the special daughter (first time in 58 years) and she is the villain now.

My daughter would cut her hand off before she would upset my mother. However, my daughter calls me crying because she called my mom to chat and my mother ended up being upset about something and told my daughter that she was upsetting her.

To be honest, I prefer the cold to the heat - cannot stand heat/humidity.... grumbling about the cold is preferable to dying in the humidity of the summer .......besides, I have to grumble about something :)
