Bubble Wrap vs. Egg Cartons in Shipping

I have received eggs both ways. I have received broken eggs only when they were bubble wrapped.

It is not really what they are wrapped in but how much material is between the eggs and the outside of the carton.
The material also has to have give. Densely packed shredded paper seems to do the best.

Too small of a box and not enough material between the eggs and the outside seems to be the problem.

I love Lisa's packing. I've bought eggs from her twice and both times had very good hatch rates.

I bought expensive eggs once last fall. They came in a carton wrapped in napkins and carton stuffed with more napkins. The carton was taped and placed in the box with crumpled newspaper. By the time I received it, the carton had shuffled to the bottom of the box. No broken shells, but I had about half the eggs with dislodged air sacks. Only 2 of 12 eggs even tried to develop, and I had none reach hatch stage. It was a very poor and expensive experience.

I've shipped turkey eggs and followed Lisa's method.

If I am shipping less than a dozen I bubble wrap using the burrito method. Then I stick each egg into a styrofoam cup which I then stuff with paper towel to take up any extra space. I put all of the cups into a bubble wrap lined box and then use wadded up newspaper to cushion around each cup so they can't move inside the box.

If I ship a dozen then I bubble wrap each egg individually and then put them into an egg carton (since I ship duck eggs which are big even before the bubble wrap, I usually have to cut the top off of the egg carton). Then I put the top back on over the bubble wrapped eggs and tape it shut. After its taped I wrap the entire carton in bubble wrap and place that in a bubble wrap lined box. I use crumpled up newspaper again to make sure the eggs can't move at all.

What I do might be overkill but I would feel terrible if i did a half backsidees wrap job and then wasted someones time and money. I can't do anything about USPS but I can do my best to make sure they are packaged well.

I haven't shipped too many eggs but so far I haven't had anyone complain of breakage.
