I noticed bubbles in the left eye on my silkie about 5 days ago. I'm not sure if it's MG, as there are no other symptoms. She's eating, drinking, and acting completely normal otherwise. The only thing I noticed on her was that her left nostril was plugged up with dried food, which took me a couple of days of moistening and carefully digging out the gunk to clear it out. I've been putting a drop of Vet Rx into her nostrils the last three days. Today the bubbles seem to be worse. Wondering if I should start giving her Baytril (actually, I have the generic Enfloxil 10% injectible, 100 mg). If so, what would the dosage be for her? She weighs 2 lb. 2 oz. I would be giving it orally, so would it be twice a day, or just once a day?

If I'm figuring it out correctly, it looks like I should use .10 ml twice per day. Maybe casportpony can chime in. I found an old post with the math: 2.0/2.2 x 20/100 = 0.18ml - so .09ml twice per day? Am I figuring it out correctly?

Sorry that your Silkie is sick.
Bubbles in the eyes is usually indicative of Mycoplasma. Since she had a clogged nostril, did you look inside her beak to make sure there's no mucous, plaques or canker?

Baytril dosage is 0.05 ml per pound given 2 times a day. So yes, if she weighs 2lb 2oz she would get 0.10ml twice a day.

I would also flush the eye with saline, remove any pus or debris. You can put some an eye ointment in the eye or use Vetericyn eye gel.

Hope this clears up soon. Keep us posted.

Thanks for your help, Wyorp Rock! I just gave her first dose of .10ml of Baytril, and I'll give the second dose this evening. I'm guessing I dose her for 5 days, correct? Yes, I did look inside her beak and it looks clear and normal. I will do as you suggest and flush her eye with saline. I have Vetericyn Plus, but not the Eye Gel -- will that work the same?

I agree that it may be MG or mycoplasma gallisepticum. There may be only mild symptoms or worse, depending on secondary infections. They Baytril (enrofloxacin) is a good choice for 5 days. Keep an eye on how much she is drinking to make sure she is taking a normal amount. Do not give any other drugs or trace minerals found in things like NutriDrench during treatment. Probiotics or a small spoonful of plain yogurt can help get her gut bacteria back to normal during and after treatment.

Yes, for 5 days.
I don't know is the Vetericyn Plus can be used in the eyes, read your label.
You may be able to find Terramycin eye ointment or you can also use Plain Neosporin in the eye as well.

Hi Eggcessive, Yes, as much as I don't want to admit it, it's probably MG. When I saw the bubbles in the eye, that's what first came to mind. I just was hoping it wasn't, as it's so darn contagious. None of the other hens show symptoms, so I'll be keeping my eye on them. Do you think it's okay to put a drop of Vet Rx into each nostril once a day? I just thought that it might help with any possible sinus issues. And I make my own Milk Kefir, so as soon as her Baytril treatment is done, I'll be giving her some of that to get her gut bacteria back to normal. Or is it okay to give her the Kefir during antibiotic treatment?

Yes it is fine to give probiotics during and after antibiotics. It does nothing to harm the effectiveness of antibiotics. I have never used VetRx. It is a mixture of herbs and camphor. I would read the label and use as directed.
MG is pretty much everywhere, and seen in wild birds, and it is not quite as easily spread as other diseases. Here is an article to read how it is spread:

Each state is different in costs and some require involving a local vet. Here we can deliver or ship a body to the poultry lab, but they must send the results to your local vet. It would be good for most of us to call the state vet with our questions. Some on BYC seem to get more help by state veterinary schools in the area of testing, just to see what they are dealing with.
