Buckeye Breed Thread

Y'all could be praying for me -- my order from Sand Hill is supposed to come next week, Mille Fleur Leghorns and whatever Buckeyes they have left after prior orders are filled! I originally ordered ten Buckeye chicks (and 15 of the Leghorns), but will be happy if I get even two or three of them! But I'd sure like to get all ten, so pray that they have a really good hatch!!!

(Someday I'd like to order from one of the breeders here, but I've already exceeded my normal annual quota of chicks to raise, LOL!)

Have 3 buckeye chicks in the brooder with 3 Speckled Sussex chicks. On hatching, They were very discernable, the SS having chipmunk stripes and the buckeyes not.

Now one of the buckeye's body has feathered out exactly like the SS, but still has an unstriped blonde fuzzy head. The other buckeyes have their wing feathers and strange little black tufts on the shoulders but are otherwise still fuzzy. So the one Buckeye looks more like a SS that the other Buckeyes at this point (about 2.5 weeks)

Is this an indication of gender, or do I have a crossed chick, or do the Buckeyes sometimes go through a feathering stage like this?

It truly depends on the strain of Buckeye. I have so many strains in mine that my chicks look different for the first 2-3 months, then they start conforming to the buckeye standard.

Good point.

My sons are hoping to show them at the county fair in July, so a cross would not be good in this particular batch.

I think they are all roosters in there, maybe one hen Sussex.

Anyone ever get a recording of one the roosters crowing? I'm curios to hear what a chicken roaring like a dinosaur sounds like. My husband thinks I'm nuts but since we are going to have these lovelies the thought of waiting months to hear this is much like holding out a steak to a dog and telling him he must wait a week to eat it.
