Sorry to hear of your loss.
Coyotes are one reson we have Buddy. He is an Anatolian Shepherd, Livestock Guardian Dog. A coyote will not get within a half mile of Buddy. The birds will stand around till Buddy eats all his food he wants then run in for his leftovers. He lives and sleeps with our poultry. He had no training with poultry. We placed him on a cable for a short time until he got use to everything. He is now willing to give his life for our poultry and us.

Hi Jim, Buddy's a BIG boy

I've heard of the breed before and a lot of our local meat goat farmers keep them for their stock. We have a Kelpie, similar to a heeler, a herding dog, but they are not near as big as Buddy. Coyotes run rampid in our area and this is the 2nd time we've had an attack, but it's been a couple years in between. We shoot a lot of them, but they are a VERY coy & sly animal! Sometimes you win, other times you just dont, saddly

I saw some pictures in this string that look like the roosters I have. Is this a buckeye that I have or mixed breed? The only difference I see is my birds have some lacing in their chest area that I did not see in the pictures I looked at on this post. Can someone identify it for me please? I have three of these guys and the hens are covered in the lacing all the way around their bodies-absolutely beautiful birds. They don't care to be handled but are not aggressive (other than one rooster) and they do come running for snack time.

How do these open air coops work in WI winters, or do they go into the more enclosed barn for the winter?

I am trying to plan for the single comb roosters for winter, we had frostbite issues last year. :-(

Had a exciting day yesterday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Got my first Buckeye egg. They were hatched 2/11/10. Nice beautiful egg and good size for a pullet. Some what rounder then my Jersey cross eggs.

Woo hoo!

I'm still waiting for our first egg. Husband keeps telling the girls, "First one that lays an egg gets to live to old age!"

Don't know if that will help or not!

Nice coops!

A bit off topic, but at times I misss my Icelandic sheep. Really to hot here for them.

My Buckeyes, and all birds, have faired well in this heat. We have the kids fill water 3 times a day.

Iceman, you need to empty your pM inbox, it wont accept any more new messages.

I should have your BE eggs ready to ship this wk.

Yes, everything goes into an enclosed barn for the winter, it has a 4 x 4 door on the North side for them to go in/out, and 2 windows on the west side(windows out and wire over them). It works well for me!!! Im in the process tho of building new chicken coops, I'd like to get 2 of them done this year, and then tear down the barn that I am using now, in the spring(or next fall, we'll see), and put up 2 more chickens coops.

While busy caging the broilers for their trip to the Amish butcher, the alpha male Buckeye cockerel from our JamesA Easter hatch came racing over to protect them. He did not attack my son or I, but he never left and really wanted to protect those crying broilers from whatever was upsetting them. He seemed a little confused that it was water-and-feed types making them cry.

Do I need to worry that this Buckeye boy will become human aggressive? He is very attractive and I'd like to keep him, but I do not need a human aggressive rooster. There is a backup roo, but I kind of like this guy.
