No body is laughing at you for being smart enough to live in a mild climate. If I could swing it financially, I would have 2 homes! One further North right here in MN for the summers and one down south for the winters. I'm only 37 and every year this weather gets older and older

Christopher;

I share your feelings. It was -24F this am with a -55w/c and we are an hour apart! If I were only younger and wiser and did not have a mortgage!

Forgot to add, I keep the birds in the garage where it is 40F. They're happy as clams in a warm sea and laying!

I grew up in the middle of Alaska (Delta Junction, on a homestead) so I have a tendency to smother a grin at people complaining about cold weather, too! The flip side of that is that I suffer in the summer heat. I'm about as far south as I'd care to live now, although we did spend a year at Homestead AFB, south of Miami, when my ex was in the Air Force. That was something like living in a sauna for eight months of the year.

My Buckeyes where eager to get out when I opened the door this morning despite the snow and 15 degree temp.

I took more pics, but haven't uploaded them yet, it takes awhile on dial-up. I'll try and get some more posted soon.

good looking birds! I wish my flock could go outside. There is about 4' of snow in the run right now. Haven't even seen the pop door from the outside in a month!

What strain are yours?

Thank you. What strain? They are potentially from all the strains. I got them from David Puthoff. He started his flock several years ago. In the process of building it, he has gotten blood from most of the know breeders, and now has a huge flock. He only lives about 15 minutes from me, and we talk or visit often. I have a pen of 16 week old that I am getting ready to evalute per ALBC suggestions. They are all offspring from the ones in the picture. From what I've checked so far, they seem very good. There are several people on here that have recently hatched some eggs from mine. It will be interesting to see how they all turn out.

If you want to let you're Buckeyes out, just shovel the pop door out, and let them go. They won't care there is 4" of snow. LOL

Here is a top view of my big guy. He was standing only about a foot or so from me when I took it. He is almost a year old, and is getting very big. I'd guess 12 pounds. He is as gentle as can be. He is housed with his brother, and I seldem see them fight anymore. My 4 year old collects eggs sometimes (supervised of course) and he acts like she's not even there. She carried him around a lot when he was young, and I don't think he sees her as any threat.

bigredfeather, you should get an accurate weight on that guy. If he weighs in at 12 pounds, he is way over standard for a Buckeye. My thoughts, thrown out there for your consideration.

I hear ya. One of the things I dislike about living in KY (really almost the only thing) is how brutal the heat is during the summers. I hate it. I am not a hot weather person at all. I'd far rather be out in the cold and have to put on a sweater than be out in the humid heat. Only so many items of clothing you can take off ya know.

For me, idea temps are about 70 with a cool breeze, then I can work without sweat dripping in my eyes.

It is 19 out, very windy and still snowing...has been most of the night. Even tho I shoveled the deck twice and a path out back for me and the dogs,and to check on my chickies, I don't mind the cold and snow. Good time of the year to burrow in, light a fire, and sit with my laptop and learn about 'Buckeyes'. And workin my way thru the archives on AmericanBuckeyePoultryClub. I have to admit . . . it has been quite entertaining!

Okay... you people forced me into it! I put 5 Bantam Buckeye eggs in the incubator yesterday. With a good wind, they should hatch on the 23rd. However, the potential exists that these may be bantam Buckeye X bantam White Cochin! They were all mingling when we picked up the birds. The cockerel has been doing his job so it will be interesting to see what hatches out. I could end up with yard monkeys!
