Buckeye Breed Thread

Oh heavens, I got distracted and forgot to ask my question. I already have someone who wants some of my chicks. How much do Buckeye chicks go for? How much would you sell yours for?

Yes I was referring to Dunlap Hatchery for Meyers stock. I'm not sure where Dunlap got theirs from I just know that Meyers got theirs from Dunlap.

A few years ago I raised a bunch of new breeders for Meyers and sold them the hatching eggs. I finally got frustrated with them and pulled the breeding stock and told them I was no longer interested in raising hatching eggs for them. It didn't make sense for me to sell hatching eggs for $1.60 / dozen... when I was getting $2.00 / dozen for eating eggs.

I remember when the boxes came in, they had Dunlap on the shipping lables. If I remember right I had three breeds from them... Buckeyes, Colombian Rocks, and GLW.

This was 4 years ago so they may have added new lines as they didn't have much to work with. I only had about 24 breeders and they kept some of the eggs for future breeders after I told them I was no longer going to sell to them. I know a lot has changed at Meyers, they have added on to their hatchery and offer a lot more varieties.

I would assume that they all came from one or two hatcheries to start as 5 years ago their wasn't too many hatcheries offering buckeyes.

Here's Dave Puthoff's sales page:

Bear in mind that different people may charge different rates for chicks depending on their years of experience with poultry, whether they show, and lots of other variables. Cheaper is not necessarily better, nor is more expensive. Just fwiw...

I noticed the same thing when I checked them out last night. The must not raise them anymore... or I got my hatcheries mixed up. I only ordered from two hatcheries... when I got the breeder birds.

I have the catalog around here somewhere...

Thank you so much!

Laura your website is wonderful and it makes me want my buckeyes to grow up fast!

I didn't even have the Buckeyes for sale. I just mentioned them on my list of chickens I raise. Wow. The guy must know what he wants. He pinpointed the Dark Cornish and White Rocks first and then he wrote back that he checked out the Buckeyes and they seem like a great breed.

Smart man.

I think you will find that you'll be hatching lots of the eggs your birds lay, rather than eat them. I know I do!

That would be great. I have become quite addicted to hatching. Every stage of egg through adult is just facinating.

Here is their catalog from 2006, you can see the buckeyes along with the colombian rocks and the GLW. I saved the catalog as I thought it was pretty cool at the time.... notice the buckeyes color. They had good color when I had them but don't know if they still do now. I scanned the image.. not sure how to make it look right, LOL... just bought a new computer have no idea how to work it.

If they didn't come from Dunlap they were ideals or privets to start with... I can't remember which other hatchery we ordered from as I can't find the receipt (over four years old).
