We talk about Buckeyes being such great foragers. When I let my Buckeyes out each morning, a little contingency of older hens head straight for the compost pile:

Chickielady: Just want to add, the pullets' neck "hackle' ends in the most gorgeous green

That green showed up in a lot of pullets this season, and I previously had not had that occur. It seems the darker I get my Buckeye females, the more that green wants to come out in their hackles; it is a fine line getting a nice dark pullet without any green tips in the hackles. I believe my American Class Champion male is holding the green tips in the hackles -- overall, he darkened up my pullets though & I got a few without any.

None, and he is BIG BONED, and very nice with the girls...and I LOVE the green tips on the pullets..they are so irridescent!
I have people falling head over heels for this breed, and to top it off, the first 3-4 eggs have been 3" long.
Seriously, let me upload a pic~

Well done Chris!!!!!!!!!!!!
These birds are so friendly and all around perfect....healthy, forage constantly.
They have become beggers whining to be let out now

And will actually tell me all their problems if I sit & listen.
They are so very personalble.
Note:
The eggs have all been at or over 3" long, the width of my hand.

Thanks Chickielady; I enjoyed seeing the pictures of your Buckeyes. I am still amazed that eggs can go from Alabama to Washington & hatch and become that. Those are huge eggs for pullets.

hey chickie! how old are the cockerels? Comparing them to mine--hatched june 8, 2011.

Hello!
These birds pipped on April 4th of this year.
Sept 4th they were 5 Months old........in a few days they will be 6 months old.
You can tell from the pics (taken a few days ago) that the pullets look fantastic, and will gain weight, but the cockerals will fill out ALOT & grow into his bones.
These are such NICE birds, too, always 'talking' to me, curious, and friendly.

Edited to add: Great packing & shipping Chris!
