For the information of All Hands: Anyone looking to buy a late Christmas present for themselves or someone else in the form of photography gear, I may have some helpful info for you.

I just spent about 6 months researching cameras, lenses, flashes, you-name-it. In doing so I came across some excellent sites which allow you to do a side-by-side comparison of various brands/models and see the similarities/differences according to each of the various specs. There were also sites that provided indepth reviews on same. I also looked at a half dozen to maybe a dozen different sites to purchase from.

Even though I still wound up spending over three grand for everything, I could have easily spent another $1500-2000 for the same stuff if I hadn't taken the time to research everything like I did. So I'm offering to pass on what I learned to anyone who might be in need of such info. If interested, email me as I may not see your request on here.

Btw, now that I have my new camera, I plan to start a photo album consisting of a weekly pic for male and female from Day Old thru 1-year of age. I also plan to build a new website where I'll put these photos so all can see them when they have a question about what their bird should look like at a given age.

God Bless,

I finally have some Buckeyes. I've waited over a year and hatched these guys right before Thanksgiving. They are the friendliest chicks. Every time someone opens the brooder door they jump right into your arms. I can't wait until they get big and fat and are strutting through the yard this spring. Thanks for such a wonderful and informative board!

Oh, anyone one have any idea what sex they might be?

Greenpeeps: Oh, anyone one have any idea what sex they might be?

Congratulations, I know you will enjoy them. Too early / young to tell sex. Perhaps in 2-4 more weeks, some good pictures, we can make some very educated guesses.

Here are my 7 week olds. It seems like they must be older. To me they have grown so big, but when I compare them to the roo they are so tiny. We raised them inside and just put them out into the unheated coop last week as the weather warmed.

jldaniel33, Welcome to BYC!

They look good. Nice shank size (I'm looking at relative to their body size). What are you feeding them?

I fed as recommended here, the Wild Game Startena until this week and now have begun the conditioner. I am lucky that I can find it here!

Interesting; you've done well. That is why your chicks have such good growth which shows in their shank size. A couple of weeks ago, I took possession of 14 Buckeye chicks that were 8 weeks old December 22. They were from eggs that I had given a friend locally. The friend's job moved him to another State, and he had to move where chickens are not allowed & I decided to take the chicks. My friend has only been feeding them regular Startena (I believe the Purina Sunshine variety so low in protein % and absent animal protein.) -- actually, he had someone looking after them while he was getting started at the new position. Even at their advanced age, I decided to put them on the 30% Game Bird Chow Startena for a few weeks to see if they could catch up -- I am interested to see how they turn out. Presently, they are at ~9 weeks old and don't look as big as yours. I'll report on here how they turn out. We'll see.

Thanks for sharing pictures of your Buckeyes. I hope you let us know how they progress.

I also have to admit to feeding them organic scrambled eggs regularly too! I am so happy you think they look good. I also think I have a lot of males for culling later if size of comb is any indicator. Only about 5 out of 17 that have no comb.

If anyone in NW MO has any culls, please let me know. I would love to get a few of them for personality alone at this time. My daughters and I are considering getting into serious breeding & my oldest has fallen in love with the buckeyes. At this point, we are only set up to have backyard pets, that would intermingle with our other mutts. They sound great, and we want to get a few to "test run." I would also be interested in eggs. We just filled the incubator, and plan to fill it up with buckeyes when these hatch.

Love reading about them!

Jen
