Buckeye Breed Thread

Merry Christmas to all~
And I will say, of all the breeds I have, the Bucks are the most friendly, always, even as started birds.
They are curious, underfoot and will get up in my lap or on my shoulder even when I am working with the garden tools to clean coops.
They have to see what I have..each hen will 'speak' her little murmurs...and look me right in the eye as she talks to me.
Of course I talk back.
The Cock birds will come right up & eat from my hand...nicely!
They are extremely intelligent.....as far from flighty as can be.
I love them more each day.
By the same token, I have had Dark Cornish until a few weeks ago, and they were stand-offish, alerting hens to my presence with alarm and in doing so taught the hens to be afraid of us.
As hard as it is to believe Cornish is not in the Buckeye....despite the great resemblance.......I am glad they do not have the Cornish Game flighty-ness.
So, that is nice to know.
I love the way these birds LOOK at me, and listen to my voice...Love them so much!!

I thought she used "Indian game" which was the old name for Cornish.

The forum administrators have asked us not to discuss specific breeders in this thread, as doing so can lead to contention. You can contact me, or Chris, (or anyone else who volunteers) about their experiences with Dave and other breeders, but for now we have been asked that we not get into such topics here.

Thanks.

Honestly, most small flock owners are trying to do the right thing with the breed, you will not go wrong with ANY small breeder over a hatchery. Some may have issues (like me) of meeting ship dates but every one of the small breeders that I have an extreme desire to meet SOP with their flock and it's offspring.

Laura, Chris, Janet, John, Jeff, Bill, Ted, Jamie and Jeremiah and the plethora of other breeders will typically provide some extraordinary stock. You will rarely go wrong with any of them.

I would purchase from the breeder you feel the most comfortable with, if it isn't me I am OK with that. I just do not recommend buying from the big hatcheries who's only goal is profit margin.

For the breed my friends, for the breed.
Peace,
Dave

I am in Ellensburg, WA and just got a load of chicks from Dave (well a couple of months ago). I have 17 surviving and have just put them outside to face the cold. They are doing so great! I read the posts about feeding them Wild Game Feed and they are big, healthy, and apparently happy tho' I am no expert! I am looking forward to my Buckeye adventure. Up to now it has been 100 % positive, kids love them, they are not bothered by the little bit of snow and cold. Looking forward to eggs in spring!!

Understandable.

No worries, there have been heated discussions, we are all proud of our flock and offspring. Let's keep this one mellow and everything will be fine.

Honestly most small breeders concentrate on Standard of Perfection while the larger hatcheries only worry about production and profit.

Good luck!!!
