I also have 17 chicks, now 9 weeks old and I transitioned them from the Game Bird Startena to the Game Bird Conditioner. I think the results of that Buckeye study said that reducing the protein from 30% to around 18 was a good idea after 8 weeks. That doesn't change the amount they eat though! I have them outside, but I do not have grass in winter so I have been supplementing them with a grain mix that I found on the internet...split peas, oatmeal, barley, wheat, corn, etc., plus scraps like parsley, carrots, and other veggies. They have some grown chickens to show them and they are getting the picture on treats!

I cannot wait until the grass starts to grow...but not a whole lot to eat when its frozen outside!

I have a new question. Why are there two Buckeye Clubs? Is one more "official" than the other? Which is better associated with APA and the ABA? Sorry fairly I'm new to Buckeye ownership and am looking to join a breed club.

The American Buckeye Poultry Club (of which I am the founder and Treasurer), is a registered non-profit. We are Associate Members of the APA and the ABA. We have a Constitution and Bylaws, and hold elections. We do charge for membership, and members receive a quarterly newsletter and are eligible for prizes and trophies from the club at sanctioned shows where we have a Meet.

The other club isn't, isn't, doesn't, doesn't, and doesn't.

We have a Facebook group (the original) here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/109807375349/

And the ABPC is in the process of redoing our website, and once it's done we'll post a link here. We also have the first Yahoo Group devoted to Buckeyes (the other club started one a year after ours) which I am not permitted to post the link for here (BYC rules) but which I can send you the link for if you contact me offline. You can see more about Buckeyes here on my website: http://www.pathfindersfarm.com/Buckeyes.html

You know,

That twigged a blurb I read not too long ago about getting liver, suet, and mixed grains equal parts, giving 'em a good blitz in the food processor, put it in a mould, pop it in the freezer and voila': slightly disgusting but highly nutritious treat for the birdies especially at the time you're trying to bolster nutritional status going into the breeding season. Anyone else heard of similar?

No, but that sounds good. The only thing I'd want to be sure of is not to have one percentage or another too far out of balance (ie make sure you've got about 18% protein in there.)

There are two Buckeye Clubs because there are so many folks who just L-o-v-e Buckeyes.

The American Buckeye Club is not affiliated with APA and ABA, but there are members who do belong to the APA/ABA, win at shows, and discuss Buckeye topics with members regardless of whether they are backyard chicken folk or serious show attendees plus everything in between.

The American Buckeye Club seems to be interested in the history of the Buckeye, helping folks find good looking and healthy sources of Buckeyes, preserving all the Buckeye lines and strains, and promoting the breed. At least that's what it seems like to me when I read through member comments.

The American Buckeye Club is free and maintains a public list of breeders and fanciers to buy from. There's nothing to keep you from joining both clubs. They'd both welcome you with open arms. Belonging to one club doesn't mean that you can't belong to the other also.

http://www.facebook.com/groups/126598094076064/ is the Facebook account of the other club.

Ok, here is joy in a tub::: The little chick is so happy to stretch out!!!!
The dark chicks are Black Java and 1 OE x Marans so have tufted shanks.
Awesome Buckeyes!!!
Wanted also to say, with recent bitter cold temps here, 1 more hen has gone broody

the last one snapped out of it (2 weeks ago) by herself, and of all my breeds, the Bucks continue to lay daily (except the 1 broody!)
AND Big Daddy is still very fertile (100%)
