Robin, thanks for the additional info and especially the time/effort you took to provide pics. It is much appreciated.

Once I saw "It is about 8" -10" tall, 2 1/2 feet wide & about 3 feet long....", I got a much better idea as the original pic was somewhat deceiving because it looked much smaller to me.

I went out last night and rigged something up with some dishpans and big flower pots but I'm gonna pick up a few of those mortar mixing pans for sure! Thanks again!

Oh btw, I've been spraying the butts of the birds down below with a Permethrin solution and planned to carry the DE down this weekend. The Permethrin has knocked the mites back quite a bit but I've found it never keeps them away. The DE on the other hand I've found to work great. I can see where the combination would add a double punch.

God Bless,

Tailfeatherz.....

I also use this product, have for several years.
It is fantastic on dogs, & birds but not for cats.
This is a seriously condensed little bottle..and has complete instructions on it to make a dip, or use as a spray.
We have used it to spray coops, roosts, nest boxes & flies.
We also use it on the birds..
Only IF we do have a mite problem show it's ugly face.
I have sat in a lawnchair many summer afternoons and squirted chicken fannies with my spray bottle that has a stream or spray nozzle on it.
It is kinda fun.just squirt them in the rear !!

I buy 2 of the little bottles & it lasts all year.

DH just made X's of 2x8 and got the dust bathes off the coop floor.finally

AND wanted to add, that I use Cedar shaving in all the adult bird coops, and white in the chick pens.
I love the cedar..nice & clean & dust free.
Costs a $1 more than white but I believe the anti insect properties help.
All our adult bird coops are well ventilated, no chance that fumes will ever bother any of the birds as so many say.
It just ain't so.
Hope this helps, you have my full regimen now, and I eprinex 2 X a year, fall (October) and Spring (April)
Dab on the back of the neck where the bird cannot eat it.

Not to put too much into this topic but.today pictures::

What a great day, in between the T-cells......
I am VERY glad they can dust themselves to their hearts content without me!!
The way they were intended to do.

Hi Robin, I have the same Permethrin bottle. Got it from the Co-Op just five minutes away. I mix up a solution in a gallon jug, then pour that into a spray bottle that I washed out to use. Works great but I have found that I need to go heavier on the dosage than is recommended online for chickens. I have also found that while it will knock back the mites, it won't keep them away like the DE does.

I also use Cedar in my coops and despite what so many others rant about, I have never had any problems with using Cedar. I'm convinced it helps. I'm also lucky in that the Cedar costs the same as the white shavings here. I also use the "Small Flake" white chips because I find they go farther than the regular and they make skimming of the top shavings under the roosts easier.

I have some Eprinex but save it for worms twice a year. For it, I pluck the feathers in the underneath part of the wing where the thin layer of skin is and then apply it there.

God Bless,

Thanks to all, this is a very informative thread. I am still in the process of reading all of it, but would like to ask a question while I learn. Our son is 12 and is in the 4-H for the first time, and I want to get some chickens as well. Anyway, we can both agree on the Buckeyes as a good breed to work with. We live in N.E Ohio and just wondering if anyone here that is selling eggs or chicks that happens to be within a 3-4 hour drive? If so , please give us a yell.

Never saw any replies other than Robin's to my original question. In short, am I the only one who has Buckeyes that seem to attrack the mites over all the other breeds? Anyone else ever notice this?

God Bless,

Apparently. I do have a question for you, my friend.
Last fall another bird breeder a bit S & E of you had a few birds suddenly covered in Northern Mites die..perfectly healthy just days before, you should know of whom I speak...she works with the 4 H.
I am just wondering if the onslaught of red mites does not have something to do with your location, and if there may be a migrating flock there by that is infested.
Where I am, on the salt flood flats of the Pacific Ocean...we have so many migrating birds, and most come to de louse in salt water & salt mud.
Royce you are a hunter & know what de lousing migrating birds do.
So...my wonder has always been why you breeders up in that country have has such a hard hit of these parasites???
Notice any migrating birds around ??

I had a bout a couple of years ago that hit my Japs, and never got on anything else. My guess is that you got them just about killed out but missed a few or some in the coop and it took a while to build back up to bothersome level. Just a few is nearly impossible to find, then it seems like all at once you have an explosion.
