Would love to see photos of your bantam Buckeyes :). Don't see many of them around here.

Buckeye chicks can come in a range of colors from a pale yellow to a dark rusty red. Sometimes the lighter chicks feather out a lighter red than darker chicks as adults but sometimes it doesn't mean anything.

The little girl in my pic was pure yellow when I got her - I thought I may have been slipped a white leghorn ... but her rust is coming in nicely now.

My 4 week old chicks have been outside for 3 days now. The first two nights we had to go outside and move them into the coop in the grow out pen, last night we forgot to check on the chickens before bed, and tonight when we went out to move them inside all 17 of them were already in the coop! And today they saw their first rain. I was so afraid they wouldn't be smart enough to go inside, and this time of year it seems like all we get are thunderstorms. I was very happy that most of them went in during the rain, and the few that stayed out were still scratching. It didn't rain long, so at least the ones that chose not to go inside didn't get too wet.

They are a fairly clever breed. We're about to move a group of pullets to a larger coop area, but need to whack down some weeds in there before we do. The hydrant we use for water has a large group of bushes that grows around it, and tall weeds grow up there too. If we don't keep the big weeds down, the young birds will hide in there at night rather than go in the coop with some of the older birds. So before we can move them we have to remove the area where they can hide at sunset, don't want to lose any to predators. But I like having the bushes there, as it's a cool place for them to go during the day, and protects them from hawks too.
